A used car only beats a $999 e-bike if you earn over $28/hr
Line chart of effective speed on trips under 8 miles, counting the after-tax hours worked to pay for each vehicle, across hourly wages. The car lines climb steeply as wages rise, while the e-bike lines stay nearly flat. At the median wage of $23.80/hour, a used car averages 8.4 mph, a 20 mph e-bike 8.8 mph, and a 28 mph e-bike 11.3 mph. A used car passes the 20 mph e-bike only above about $28/hour and never catches the 28 mph e-bike.

👏👏👏 We couldn’t agree more!
When you take a transit vehicle with strangers, there is an inherent trust you're giving to one another. That trust in each other is so essential to the health of our larger society and our democracy.

When we start to drive people away and send messages that that shared space is not a place to be, you're going to see our institutions and our societal structures start to dismantle. I believe in CTA not just for Chicago, but really for our country.

Umbrella use is an indicator sign of a healthy city. People used to actively moving about their urban spaces know that simple tools mitigate weather concerns. Alternatively, this is why you see North Americans getting soaked in the rain. They know nothing beyond car to door, door to car transit.

A #WarOnWalking. A war on biking. A war on public transit. A war on any transportation choice other than driving. A war on better cities. But a war on cars? Hardly. Cars still get most of the space, rights, budget, prioritization, etc. And any effort to add more choice is immediately attacked.

I suspect this is common in most NYC neighborhoods. Due to their size and how much space we've given to them, it seems as if cars are being used by people for local trips. In reality, so much of the traffic that plagues our neighborhoods is cut-through, with no real benefit to anyone locally.

In the event of a collision (with just about anything), the cyclists would bear the brunt of the consequences, while the drivers push the danger onto society. I have a feeling that that's not the point she was driving at, though.
