Joy when traveling is taking a detour because you want to extend the journey. Some modes experience it more than others.

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath Some costs are savings.

Completed in late 2025 at a cost of €14 million, Tallinn's Lastekodu Street has been rebuilt around slower traffic and safer cycling, and more pedestrian space and greenery. It now features raised intersections, cycle tracks, benches and planting, while the design speed has been reduced to 30 km/h.🧵

Modal filters keep streets safe and accessible for those who need access while preventing unnecessary car traffic. An unobstructed lane for walking and biking, with retractable bollards that allow authorized vehicles through while keeping others out.

Both are city vehicles, but... Only one demands minimal space, doesn't threaten lives, and causes zero wear on our roads. Yet the cargo bike has to beg for every single scrap of safe infrastructure, while the massive SUV is just handed the entire city by default.

Cycling is beneficial to both the cyclists and the people around them, but you don't get all the available benefits if half of people are afraid to ride. The obvious way to improve safety is to build cycling infrastructure. #cycling
