Helpdesk ≠ Backlog A helpdesk ticket is not a shortcut into the development backlog. Support should triage, diagnose and resolve where possible. Development gets involved when the issue genuinely needs code or deeper technical investigation. That boundary protects everyone’s time. #Agile #Support

My take on the #Omnibus and changes to #GDPR as proposed by the Irish #Presidency: lnkd.in/p/eJ_ypdXy
linkedin.com
#presidency #germany #commission #personaldata #ai #gdpr #charter #treaty #artificial #gdpr #eu #omnibus #dsgvo #ki #dataprotection #privacy #datenschutz | Paul Nemitz
The plans of the Irish #Presidency, supported by #Germany and the European #Commission, to in practice exempt the collection and processing of #personaldata for #AI related purposes largely from the discipline of #GDPR are not in line with the #Charter of Fundamental Rights nor the #Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. In a time where #Artificial Intelligence is already as ambient as electricity, the changes on the table in the Council amount to an illegal change of primary law, namely of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European and of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, both of which guarantee the protection of personal data, through an act of secondary law in the form of amendments to GDPR. It is likely that thus the Court of Justice would annul such secondary law #GDPR amendments, as they factually exempt AI from the guarantees provided in Treaties and render them largely meaningless in a world in which AI is already all over the place. At a time when California has strengthened it's law on AI and privacy, and even in Washington the discussion on third party controls and protections against AI risks and overrrach are taking off, the path pushed by the Irish Presidency and some others is anachronistic. Emptying GDPR from it's relevance for AI would add further damage to the cardinal sinn of the AI Act, which does not forsee any new ex ante third party controls on AI and thus provides a lower level of protection of public interests and individuals than is provided through legal requirements such as ex ante building permits in construction or ex ante type appproval for new Car designs. The future of AI in Europe is not secured by continued exceptionalism for AI but on the contrary by starting to apply normal principles of law and protection of public interest to AI as they have been applied to other technologies, from atomic power to pharmaceuticals and chemicals, for ages. Rather than the weakening of the rules, the age of AI and it's hyperpersonalised agents of the future require stronger personal data protection rules, as Tim Cook of Apple said, and the risks of AI as we see them unfolding require ex ante controlls. The Commission and the Council should now see the signs of the times and turn around to pursue a course of strengthening rather than weakening protections.#EU #Omnibus #DSGVO #KI #Dataprotection #Privacy #Datenschutz

Perhaps the biggest Agile planning mistake is treating planning as a one-off event. Plan enough to start. Deliver something. Learn. Revisit the plan. Adjust risks and dependencies. Repeat. Agile isn’t less planning. It’s planning continuously, with better information.

“Working software” isn’t necessarily a successful delivery. Can users operate it? Is the data ready? Has it been tested properly? Are support teams prepared? Do people know what changed? Software can be technically finished while the organisation is nowhere near ready.

Agile teams embrace change. That doesn’t mean change is free. A late decision can affect development, testing, documentation, training, data and release plans. Being Agile means responding intelligently to change. It doesn’t mean pretending there’s no impact.

A sprint isn’t a force field. Work happening outside the team still matters. Procurement, security, infrastructure, data migration, vendors, business readiness, training and approvals don’t disappear because they aren’t Jira stories. The whole delivery system matters.

One Agile trap: confusing “no big design up front” with “no design up front”. There’s a huge space between designing everything before starting and starting without thinking. Do enough architecture and design to make sensible decisions. Then evolve it.

Risks don’t become less risky because nobody wrote them down. What could stop delivery? What assumptions are we making? Where are the single points of failure? What happens if X isn’t ready? Agile should make risks visible earlier, not give us an excuse to ignore them.

“We’re Agile” doesn’t make dependencies disappear. Other teams. Vendors. Data. Environments. Infrastructure. Business decisions. Approvals. You don’t need to solve every dependency up front. But discovering the important ones two days before release isn’t agility.

And 22 copies of something last sung in 2000 are taking up an entire shelf because “we might do it again”. Meanwhile, the librarian knows exactly who has copy 6. We always know. And we’re waiting.

Someone has filed Mozart under “M” but Vaughan Williams under “R”. Someone is asking, “Do we have copies of this?” while standing directly beside them. The conductor has changed the music for Sunday. On Saturday night.

Why are choir music librarians always so grumpy? Because somewhere, right now: Someone has put the music back in the wrong folder. Someone has written all over the only clean copy. Someone has lost page 7. Just page 7. Someone has taken home a copy they swear they returned.

You can have a beautifully groomed backlog and still have a badly planned project. Who needs to know what? Who makes decisions? Who needs to be involved before release? How will changes be communicated? Communication is part of delivery.

“We’ll work it out as we go” isn’t always Agile. Sometimes it just means we haven’t thought about it yet. Agile welcomes learning and change. That’s very different from starting work without understanding the destination, constraints or obvious problems ahead.
000
Richard Griffiths @dectentoo.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Agile doesn’t mean “don’t plan”. It means don’t pretend the plan is reality. You still need enough planning up front to understand the goal, major dependencies, risks and who needs to be involved. Then adapt as you learn.

One of the most expensive phrases in software development: “Don't touch that. Only Brian understands it.” That's not expertise. Expertise is valuable. Dependency is the problem. Clear, coherent, well-tested code helps knowledge travel across the team.

A design pattern might look elegant while adding machinery nobody needs. A shorter solution might become cryptic. Technical excellence requires judgement. Not commandments. #Agile #Refactoring #SoftwareDesign

Richard Griffiths @dectentoo.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
The best refactoring doesn't necessarily produce the cleverest code. It produces better code. Those aren't always the same thing. A new abstraction might reduce duplication while making the system harder to understand.

Richard Griffiths @dectentoo.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
A team can have: 2-week sprints. Daily stand-ups. Retros. Scrum board. & still take 6 weeks to make a small change. That's because process agility & technical agility aren't the same thing. If the code fights every change, the org moves at the speed of the codebase. #Agile #Scrum #SwDev #Debt
