Yeah I don’t know why sexual assault gets a pass from these people (I mean we know why but) - like if it came out that I had done vehicular manslaughter while under the influence, I think people would be well within their rights to not want to support my stuff anymore, even if I was mega sorry.

For me the hardest to lose was Arcade Fire. I really loved their early music and it meant a lot to me. However, I can't enjoy listening to it any more after learning what a creep the lead singer was. Fortunately, they are not the only band out there.

I'd come to this conclusion as well, long before this incident. There are so many talented people out there, I have no compunction about moving on when folks are found to have hurt others. I get the pain of no longer enjoying something that you'd previously cared for, but go find something new!

Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Joyce Carol Oates was tearing into Elon Musk and we were all having a good laugh about that. Get his ass etc. The basic gist of it was something I've often said about politics-poisoned posting-addicts. People who have never not even once shared their enthusiasm for a band or a book they like or literally anything they might like at all if such a thing exists. The lamentations of their enemies does not count.

There are so many people like that. Even people on your side.

Can you imagine – I don't know whatever asshole you're thinking of right now – posting a picture of the ocean or a beautiful landscape that they took? A big game hunting safari also does not count. Or about a movie that they enjoyed? In aesthetic terms I mean not as part of the culture war.

One of the great pleasures in life is sharing something beautiful with others.
Sharing art isn't quite the same as creating it in the first place but it's akin to it in that you are making it exist for others who might not have known of it otherwise. You are also at the same time making yourself known. It's an act of kindness and generosity and vulnerability. Please look at a photograph of this rushing mountain stream I stumbled across on my hike. You can’t tell at first but if you look really closely I'm in there and so are you.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

So I did tell the editor where to shove it — politely of course
Dear Professor Bee,

Thank you for your email, and again for the time that you, the handling editor, and the reviewers have devoted to my manuscript, "Method: Using generalized additive models in the livestock animal sciences". I am very grateful for the constructive review of the paper and was pleased that it was accepted for publication in animal – open space.

I have considered the requested changes to remove first-person formulations such as “I show”, “I describe”, and similar expressions. I respectfully disagree with this stylistic requirement and am not willing to revise the manuscript throughout to adopt an impersonal style. The use of first-person, active prose is a deliberate authorial choice, and there is substantial contemporary guidance encouraging clearer, more direct scientific writing of this kind, including Brennan (2024, *PNAS*, doi:10.1073/pnas.2316966121) and guidance from Nature advocating active rather than passive scientific prose (https://www.nature.com/scitable/topicpage/effective-writing-13815989/).

I would therefore be very happy for the manuscript to remain with animal – open space and proceed to publication, subject to normal copy-editing, provided that the requirement to convert first-person formulations throughout the manuscript to an impersonal style is withdrawn.

If the journal considers this stylistic change to be a condition of publication, please treat this email as my formal request that the manuscript not proceed to publication.

As I signed the publishing agreement following acceptance, I would be grateful if, in that event, you could confirm in writing that the manuscript will not be published by animal – open space and that, pursuant to the “Reversion of Rights” provision in the agreement, all rights granted under the exclusive publishing and distribution licence have reverted to me. I would also appreciate confirmation that I am free to submit the manuscript for consideration by another journal.

I regret that we have reach…

The psychology of why cyclists enrage car drivers
It’s not simply because they are annoying, argues Tom Stafford, it’s because they trigger a deep-seated rage within us by breaking the moral order of the road.

My autocorrect is having a fun time with me. I don't think "confortation" is the word I was going for there. Confrontation perhaps?
010
David Hope @davidhope.ca · 06/09/2026
Anyway I am once again left embarrased about how angry I got and probably will just follow the pedestrian signals in the future. It doesn't matter if I'm correct, I'll still be dead if a driver decides they get to go first or aren't thinking about me because they see the red hand.
110
David Hope @davidhope.ca · 06/09/2026
However the word "or" (ou) is pretty definative that cyclists can follow either a green light or a walk signal. I also doubt the driver was confused by the wording in the code and just annoyed by a person on a bike going first.
110
David Hope @davidhope.ca · 06/09/2026
To be absolutely the fairest I can to them the code does get a bit confusing as it has a whole section on cyclists following pedestrian signals if there is an advanced walk signal and it isn't super clear.
110
David Hope @davidhope.ca · 06/09/2026
I was correct, though I'm regularly honked at by drivers who don't understand this and think cyclists have to follow pedestrian signals. I'm so exhausted of confrontations while I bike from drivers in massive vehciles.
110
David Hope @davidhope.ca · 06/09/2026
Had a confortation with a driver yesterday at an intersection where he got mad because I was riding on a green light, despite the red pedestrian hand. Most annoyed that several weekend warrior cyclists backed him up. So naturally I'm awake at 6 reading the Quebec highway code.

This is such an excellent response. Yes, we have no meaningful way to remove CO2 quickly so what we've done is locked in for our lives, but every action we take can prevent things getting worse. It is never too late to reduce emissions and every action we can take matters.
