It's sensible given Hinckley is half built. But Mc Carthy says here that there is an issue with baseload thus nuclear is needed. As a statement that's just not true. You have all sorts of energy storage options. There is emerging technology in "enhanced geothermal" also.

Self seeders usually do better because you end up with trees most suitable for the exact soil & location. Also pot growing & or transplanting sets trees back a bit.

The idea that "regenerative" grazing is a climate solution has really taken hold in some quarters. But the science is clear: It doesn't work. Methane and land-use emissions just overwhelm any soil carbon benefits. Here's a great piece by @nicholasdcarter.bsky.social drawdown.org/insights/eig...

Could send your colleague this. A 10 year transition to electricity ( like we did transitioning to NS gas) could cut building demand by 50% even without renewables on grid. And heat pumps have industrial applications too, eg food industry. Pretty much any building can be done with latest units.

I Agree it won't make any difference to energy security, but it's what people in general think that matters. Polanski should obviously oppose but spend more time talking about electrification. A ten year plan to phase out gas boilers in a fair way. Numbers back that approach.

We must apply the same argument to overshoot. Climate academics must not promote scenarios that have temperatures 'peaking then declining' when there are currently no credible plans to do that. Overshooting 1.5°C means centuries of temps above 1.5°C. This is what we must prepare for.

It very well could be the hottest August day on record at some stations tomorrow - the record for Reading, for example, is 36.4ºC, and AROME has a rounded 37ºC, so it'll be very close. Records further west are more like 35-36ºC - will be an interesting day, that's for sure.

I would disagree about who got their knickers in a twist re 8.5. When it was pointed out in the late 2010s it was no longer useful as an *emissions* scenario, the climate science world doubled down & tried to cancel the guy who said that, making the whole thing seem worse when finally withdrawn.

Zero VAT on electricity in the UK from October. The real story isn’t the £45 off bills, it’s the gas-electricity price gap. We’ve loaded taxes onto electricity while gas gets off lighter, which discourages heat pumps. Cutting VAT narrows that gap.
