NEW for @carbonbrief.org As El Niño intensifies, the forest fires ripping through Indonesia are on track to reach levels not seen since 2015. The country's 2015 fire season has been linked to 100,000 premature deaths and produced emissions on a par with the EU's fossil-fuel emissions that year.
Line chart showing cumulative daily fire emissions in Indonesia. The 2026 trajectory, highlighted in red, rises sharply to around 75MtC and is closely tracking the early path of 2015, shown in dark blue. In 2015, emissions later surged to about 330MtC, far above the 2000–26 average of roughly 85MtC. Other years are shown in light grey. Source: Global Fire Emissions Database.

I find this stuff remarkable. This is in response to a story about record numbers of ambulance callouts for "life-threatening" emergencies during the June heatwave. Real, tangible evidence that extreme heat is contributing to people dying or nearly dying in the UK. But it's still a "scare story"
A commenter writes:
So according to the headline 4 days of high thirties C weather is an extreme heatwave. Goodness knows how the citizens of the UAE manage to not only survive but proper in much hotter weather. Climate change scare stories are really tedious and best left to the BBC and Met Office

I had never seen a chart where those concerned and dismissive about climate change are equally opposed to the same thing -- until @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social started polling respondents about AI data centers. (And this survey was conducted in the spring)
A majority of Americans (56%) “strongly” or “somewhat” oppose building a data center in their local area, while only 15% “strongly” or “somewhat” support building one. Opposition varies across Global Warming's Six Americas, ranging from 71% among the Alarmed to 32% among the Disengaged. Majorities of the Concerned (58%) and the Dismissive (57%) are opposed, while about half or less of the Doubtful (49%) and the Cautious (45%) oppose building a data center in their local area.

Carbon capture and storage is the subject of considerable hype – but as it stands, very little CO2 is being captured and stored.
Annual global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, compared to amount captured and stored. A square chart visually compares total fossil CO2 at 38.1bn to a tiny 0.06bn captured and stored. CCS projects currently capture less than 0.2% of the world's fossil-fuel emissions. Source: IEA, Global Carbon Budget.

This paper finds that moving to +fully organic+ egg farming in the UK would produce an extra 877,000 tonnes of CO2. That's equivalent to 0.2% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. Not huge. I'm in favour of plant-based diets but i don't know if this is a difference that's worth stressing over.
