This is also my problem with a job guarantee being seen as an alternative to basic income. What are you doing fighting for more comfy chains instead of freedom from being chained? Paine's key insight: property comes in two kinds. Natural property (the earth, air, water) belongs equally to everyone by birth. Artificial property (what people build and invent) can be owned unequally. Basic income is our fair share of the first kind.

Something hard to unsee: Imagine Earth has 100 people. 20 of them claim all the land. The other 80 have no choice but to work it, pay rent, give their means, just to survive. That's not an economy. That's a toll booth. UBI just returns each person their fair share of the commons.
