For instance: this is a Yiddish letter (1 of 5) that Rachel Zusman wrote to her son Moses in the 1560s. They were from Prague, but he lived in Cairo and she lived in Jerusalem. She tries to persuade him to move closer, even saying "may God forgive you that you made me so sad." @theul.bsky.social
A small, badly torn and waterstained corner fragment of a paper folio. About 15 partial lines of Yiddish text in brown ink are visible. The background is blue and a yellow label reads T-S AS 205.53 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-AS-00205-00053/1)

There were 2 words for "right side" though: the other was wnm.j "one for eating". They're so similar, I wonder if they have common origin with AA *ymn. The usual explanation for wnm "to eat" is onomatopoeia, but what if that's where *ymn "the eating side" comes from, too? 2/3

This is the oldest sample of Hebrew text with European musical notation. It's an autograph manuscript of Obadiah the Proselyte, a Norman-Italian priest who converted to Judaism in 1102. He traveled to Egypt and Syria, using his knowledge of Gregorian Chant to record Hebrew poetry. @theul.bsky.social

Chameleon, from the Greek χαμαί ‘on the earth’ and λέων ‘lion’, was calqued from Akkadian nēš(u ša) qaqqari lit. ‘lion of the ground’, a figure attested in the Epic of Gilgamesh (line 314 ᴜʀ.ᴍᴀʜ šá qaq‐qa‐ri). The term is paralleled in lexical tablets from Ebla (ca. 2300 BCE) as na‐iš qar‐qá‐rí‐m.
