A number of different regions are contributing to the current record low #Antarctic sea ice conditions (for this time of year). One of the only areas seeing more extensive ice cover is the Weddell Sea. + Concentration means the fraction of ice in an area + Graphic from zacklabe.com/antarctic-se...

Ten years ago, ‘You Took the Last Bus Home’ was published. It was my first collection of poetry and incredibly, it’s still going strong. To celebrate the anniversary, I thought I’d share a poem from it every day this month, starting with the title poem.
You Took the Last Bus Home

you took
the last bus home
don’t know how
you got it through the door

you’re always doing amazing stuff

like the time
you caught that train

Today’s poem is called ‘Poem, Revised Draft’.
Poem, Revised Draft

I had to write this poem again.
I left the first draft on the train
and now it doesn't look the same.

The original was a paean to Love,
to Truth and Beauty; it soared above
the everyday and all that stuff.

It would have healed estranged lovers' rifts,
stilled the sands on which time shifts
and stopped the world before it drifts

further into quagmired crisis.
It was an open heart. It wore disguises.
It employed ingenious literary devices.

I have tried my hardest to recall
its words and rhythms, the rise and fall
of those lines upon their cadenced crawl

through the English language.
But it has only caused me pain and anguish
for there was little I could salvage.

It certainly didn't end with a line like this.

Amazon's own balance sheet presents the most compelling evidence that we are stuck in the Enshittocene, the era in which everything is turning into a pile of shit, because the worst ideas of the worst people now make the most money. 1/
Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Conjuror,' a painting depicting a medieval con artist playing a shell game for an audience of astonished peasant rubes. The image has been altered: the conman now has Jeff Bezos's grinning head, and the mouths of all the peasants have been replaced with inverted Amazon 'Smile' logos, so they are now frowning.

1. On Monday, the media's focus was on the administration's treatment of the USS Lincoln. But the real story was in plain sight: an aircraft carrier that has been forgotten by the commander-in-chief is a direct consequence of war. Iran defeated America. The Lincoln is part of the aftermath.

Thought of an amazing concept for a new sitcom! It's called Roger and Rodger. It's packed with hilarity but, most importantly, it delves into the universal poignancy of two friends who have similar names. Here's page 1 of the pilot episode.

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
Axios: AI has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.

Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane — makes it easy to lose the thread. AI can help you pick it back up without starting over.
📖 I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

"I'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

A quick lesson on winning and losing a war. If you start a war of choice, blow through masses of your weapons stocks so that you cannot escalate effectively, and find the country you attacked dictating negotiating terms while in a stronger strategic position. You lost.
