mc escher is old news, have you seen shinjuku station maps
A neon wireframe of Shinjuku Station hangs in a black-violet void. Purple streets stretch toward the horizon above a white-and-cyan knot of platforms, tunnels, and intersecting passages. Corridors cross themselves, divide, and return at heights that no longer agree. The streets describe a flat city; the station beneath them describes something considerably larger. There are no solid walls, only the exposed edges of an interior that has escaped its building. In the upper-right corner, a small control panel offers checkboxes for floors 4F through B3, suggesting that the geometry might become possible again if enough of it were hidden. An English-labelled map of Shinjuku Station compresses an impossible building into a deceptively tidy arrangement of pastel platforms and passages. Parallel tracks resemble the rungs of several ladders laid through one another. Beige concourses bend around them, change elevation at tiny staircases, and emerge on the wrong side of their own walls. B7F lies near the top of the page; B1F spreads through several apparently unrelated interiors. Yellow labels repeatedly promise an exit: West Gate, Central West Gate, JR Central West Gate. Each belongs to a different understanding of west. A bright red ShinjukuStation.com logo presides over the diagram with the confidence of a place that has never had to leave itself. An intricate blue-ink drawing unfolds Shinjuku Station into an impossible architectural dissection. Orange, lavender, pale-blue, green, and pink passages weave between banks of railway platforms, diving beneath streets and resurfacing inside structures that should be outside the station. Stairways stitch together overlapping planes. Buildings stand along the edges of the cutaway, but the deeper the drawing goes, the less certain it becomes which space contains which. Tiny Japanese annotations patiently catalogue the contradiction. A smaller explanatory diagram occupies the lower-left corner, offering another station inside the drawing of the station. The white paper between the corridors could be daylight, solid ground, or further rooms. An exploded diagram of Shibuya Station arranges disconnected floors in white space like an Escher staircase equipped with public amenities. Platforms and concourses hover above one another, linked by dense flights of stairs, sloping escalators, and blue elevator shafts. The labels descend from 3F to B5F, although height appears to be negotiated separately in each part of the image. Several places claim to be B1F. Patches labelled “ground level” occur partway through the machinery. Red accessible routes trace a meticulous course through the impossible structure, passing toilets, ticket machines, and numbered exits. The legend at the bottom explains every symbol except how to get outside.

Saturn II (INT-18) was a proposed derivative of Saturn V, eliminating the S-IC. A modified S-II would become the new stage 1, augmented by Titan SRBs. The study considered various configurations, with 5 or 7 J-2s, stretching the S-II, and 2 or 4 SRBs with 4, 5, or 7 segments

In Mario Kart Wii, asphalt is slightly shiny, reflecting a band of light ahead of the player. This is implemented cleverly by leveraging something that the Wii is already doing, allowing it to not need to use any sort of additional lighting or post-processing.
In Mario Kart Wii, asphalt is slightly shiny, always seeming to reflect light in a narrow band ahead of the driver.
Increasing the contrast of the image makes the effect more visible.
Internally, this effect is achieved in an extremely simple way by leveraging an existing system:
Mipmapping is a practice whereby several copies of a texture are stored, each smaller than the previous by a factor of 2. The further away from the camera a point is, the smaller the texture is that is applied to it. This reduces aliasing (the interference patterns created by viewing high-detail surfaces at oblique angles) and improves rendering speed.
The textures are then smoothly blended. This is supported natively by the hardware and happens automatically.
SLIGHTLY BRIGHTER!
Original road texture: 1024x256 pixels
closer to camera
512x128 pixels
256x64 pixels
128x32 pixels
64x16 32x8 pixels pixels
further from camera
By making only the second texture slightly brighter, the system that automatically places the texture a certain distance away from the camera is leveraged to make a band of light that appears to move automatically with the player.
On the right, each mipmap is colored differently for a more striking demonstration.
Fun fact:
this usage of mipmaps to make a rainbow occurs in Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64!

At its core, arguing against the concept of "insanity" as a legal defense attacked the very heart of the concept of mens rea - "state of mind" - in criminal justice. State of mind is everything to crime - What was the person thinking? Why? Under what conditions? It matters... a lot.

I cannot stress enough how cute the illustrations are 🧪🔭💙📚💡
Internal page from The Universe: a graphic guide, with an illustration of the Bell Labs telescope and two cranky looking pigeons. The text above reads “The CMB was first detected in 1964,* by a pair of scientists working at Bell Laboratories - Robert Wilson and Arno Penzias. They had at their disposal a very large microwave antenna, and they found that there was background noise no matter which way they pointed their antenna.
Suspecting all sorts of instrument failures, they also trapped and evicted a pair of pigeons* that had taken up residence inside the instrument, thinking perhaps the droppings were doing something (they weren't. What they had discovered was instead the afterglow of a very hot early Universe.
They were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1978”

A Viking art related footnote... Author and flying saucer photo fabricator Billy Meier, in a video represented as showing photos from his space voyage, used stuff from books as things he claimed to see on a 'space trip'. One of these was a painting of the Viking orbiter that I did in 1975 for NASA!
A bizarre tale was brought to my attention not long ago about a European flying saucer evangelist who claimed he had been taken aboard one and transported through space and time. Normally I wouldn't have found such a claim worthy of notice but while looking through a referenced 'extraordinary claim' video I noticed that Billy Meier shamelessly used various images from NASA in his presentation of still images he claimed to take on his 'space trip'. One of these was a painting of the Viking orbiter that I did in 1975 for NASA. In his video presentation he shows photos made off a TV monitor of images from books taken with a camcorder.
I am amused that one of my works was ID'd as an alien spacecraft. It is astonishing that he thought no one would call out such a blatantly fabricated presentation. In the early 1970s that fellow faked a bunch of photos of flying saucers apparently using models etc. against European countryside, which were published in a big coffee table book I remember seeing in bookstores in the early 70s 'UFO...Contact from the Pleiades'.
I remember being amused at the amateur quality of the flying saucer photos in that book. They were defocused enough to cover some sins of fabrication like strings, or were consistent with thrown models. It would be informative to examine the original negatives of his camera photos to see the ratio of used vs discarded photos of thrown models. The sheer quantity of his claimed flying saucer photos is suspicious, as if something extraordinary was going out of its way to be repeatedly photographed by him.
Here is the video presentation if you want to suffer through it. It's a poor quality video of Billy Meier flipping through a photo album of photo prints apparently photographed from a TV screen showing camcorder views of varied space images, mainly from NASA releases. At 0:47 my Viking orbiter art appears. At 5:01 a Pteranodon painting by Zdenek Burian is unmistakable.
