A new KH-7 GAMBIT spy satellite image of Ramenskoye / Zhukovsky, Russia from May 1966 was scanned recently and shows what I think is a (the?) Myasishchev M-50 sitting outside. Full image: spacefromspace.com/declassified...

Well buy me some cattle and call me a cowboy! For a few months now I have been working on an article with Harry about how the CIA confirmed that Plesetsk was an ICBM site. It is now the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, but from around late 1959 until "sometime" in 1962 it was highly suspected as an ICBM site.

Took this photo this morning. Somebody at the White House must have seen my post yesterday about all the fences up everywhere, because today they were taking down the fencing along Constitution Ave. that has been there since May or earlier. Ballroom construction cranes at right.

I work in Washington, DC and commute by car. Every day I see the wreckage of the administration's various projects. I see the tent covering the name on the Kennedy Center, drive past the fenced, empty reflecting pool, and the fenced White House. My photo Tues morning. Worse in the other direction.

There is a bit of a story to how we obtained this 1961 report on nuclear weapons in space (and another from 1963 that we will write about later). The existence of these nukes in space studies has been known for decades, but almost all of them are classified. I FOIA'd several of them a decade ago.

I did a quick trip to the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum to see a new photography collection and talk by Andy Saunders, who remastered the photos. Really fascinating on a number of levels. There is data in the photos we have not seen before, and that can change our understanding of them.

My upcoming article will be on the Samos E-3 satellite. It was not built. The photos show the first Samos E-1 satellite, which did not reach orbit. The illustration shows the overall Samos layout. E-3 would have been a different payload on top of the rocket.

My article in next week's The Space Review is on the Samos E-3 satellite, which was never built. Almost no records about this. I'm piecing together the story based in part on what we _don't_ know, if that makes any sense.

According to Jonathan McDowell, this spacecraft, launched in 1988, just had an energetic event in orbit. Probably not fair to say it blew up, but probably one of its batteries blew up. I have written about this satellite and the program that built it.

Tonight in 1969, “Laugh-In” awarded its Flying Fickle Finger of Fate to the Pentagon and Congress for wasting $9 billion on six canceled nuclear weapons programs: the B-70 bomber, the nuclear-powered airplane, the Snark and Navaho cruise missiles, the Dyna-Soar space plane, and the Skybolt ALBM.
A screenshot of "Laugh-In" hosts Dan Rowan (left) and Dick Martin (right) standing in black tuxedos next to an easel as Rowan reads the following from a large card (Martin holds the Flying Fickle Finger of Fate award in his left hand, which is a trapezoidal wooden base with a small plaque, on top of which a mold of a left hand, painted gold and mounted on a vertical rod, with the index finger pointed upward, from which small wings extend):

"B-70 Bomber
$1,500,000,000.00

Nuclear-Powered Plane
$512,000,000.00

Snark Robot Bomber
$678,000,000.00"Another color screenshot as Rowan continues reading from the next card, pointing with his left index finger as he reads:

"Navajo [sic] Missile
$680,000,000.00

Dyna-Soar Space Plane
$405,000,000.00"Another color screenshot as Rowan continues reading from the next (and last) card and then turns his head toward Martin:

"Sky-bolt Air-to-Ground Missile
$440,000,000.00

TOTAL
$9,000,000,000.18"

Interior structure models of Earth, Venus, Mercury, Mars, the Moon, and Io, all shown to scale and key elements labelled.

Somewhere in Gondwana, the Carpasi have captured signals from the great beyond. A mission is sent to the twin ice giants to investigate. Here are a few shots of that animation! #scifiart
A distant view of a lone station above the blue ice-giants illuminated by a setting sun. A close-up of the Carpasi space station, a small ship floating nearby on its final approach for docking. A Carpasi survey-ship underway; it is a small vessel, all scaffold and antennae, and a large engine section burning hard with purple flames.
