a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

It’s a stretch, but playing the match because it’s an ineffective protest not to *might* be an argument if the government were actually being decisive about doing what it thought *was* effective, rather than doing nothing more than empty speeches at the UN.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Well, well, well - if it isn’t the consequences of our own actions. It would appear that migrants are not, in fact, the fiscal drain we’ve been told they are by years if we go by the £4bn to £6.5bn shortfall that’s been caused by the precipitous drop in numbers under this government. Funny that.

Something that's always left out of these discussions by Irish newspaper columnists calling for accomodating loyalist groups is that in their ideology and their actions, the Orange Order is a vile and bigoted hate group. It doesn't exist to celebrate any culture, it's all about hatred of others.

The NI Justice Minister who signed up for a ban on puberty blockers for trans kids and hid in a fridge during three pogroms is posting furiously on Elon Musk’s platform about **checks notes** transphobia and her, a cis woman being a target. I give up.
Naomi Long MLA @naomi_long • Sep 17

Today I was deliberately misgendered by a transphobe masquerading as a women's rights protector; protection that seems only to apply to women they agree with.

I get asked (disingenuously) to define a woman by "biological realists"; yet a subset are happy to imply I'm a man. >

NaomiLong MLA @naomi_long • Sep 17
If you're serious about women's rights, heads up.

Attacking trans-inclusive, cis women by questioning their womanhood isn't the win you think it is.
It reinforces the suspicion that, if we don't conform and comply with your views, we'll be next. And biology won't protect us.
