Been doing some thinking about how I want to be as a human while I struggle through my 40s and I think the most important thing is to periodically stop and ask myself "am I hearing this FROM young people or ABOUT young people?"

The assumption here is that it is better for millions of trans teens to suffer wrong puberty (or delay puberty as the best case scenario) than one cis teen changing their mind after HRT.

In retrospect maybe it was a little naive of us to hand the keys to literature to people who will look you in the eye and earnestly tell you not to kermit the sewer slide about the grape corn.

If anyone here has played Forbidden Solitaire, would you recommend it to a hypothetical person who just fully throws up if they're startled badly enough? Not me I'm a big boy and I lift many things but like if I were the kind of guy who throws up from jump scares?

some irate thoughts from the other website after yet another sly aside caught in a random baseball video about how worthless liberal arts degrees are
screenshot of a three post thread by me from mastodon.

POST 1: [liberal arts degree haver voice]: don't get a liberal arts degree, it's fucking useless, all it did was teach me how to read and think and understand the world i live in, when it should have just got me a job and nothing else

POST 2: people love to complain about all the ways in which higher education has quietly improved their lives for no reason other than we coincidentally live in an economy that doesn't want anyone anywhere to have a job that doesn't suck. yeah man it's definitely because your degree is worthless and you wasted your time and money, let's make sure to get that message spread far and wide so everyone knows college is pointless and no one should do it unless it comes with an express pass to CEO-hood

POST 3: god forbid someone spend four years of their life learning some shit and come away still uncertain about what they want to do with [checks notes] literally the entire rest of their natural life on this earth. i mean can you even imagine

I know that we'll never fully rehabilitate people whose first instinct on meeting someone is to yell the first thing they notice about them ("You're very tall!" "That's an unusual name!") but you don't need to inform weird people they're weird. Trust me, THEY KNOW.

So the "advice" doled out in this column makes me INCREDIBLY fucking angry as a former kid who was repeatedly taken to task by teachers for "inappropriate" drawings, culminating in a 9th-grade suspension spurred by Columbine paranoia and residual Satanic Panic. Arionne here says that was JUSTIFIED.
Slate Care and Feeding column: My Daughter's School Contacted Me About Her "Dark" Drawing. Her Punishment Doesn't Sit Right With Me.A woman describes how her 3rd-grade daughter "Maggie" was given a three-day in-school suspension for "threatening the school." Turns out the kid had an art class assignment to draw somewhere in the school and she decided to draw a zombie cafeteria because it's close to Halloween season: no weapons, no real specific people, just a zombie behind the counter. Mom is rightfully pissed-off and considering appealing the decision, but is asking for advice. Arionne Nettles, this fucking idiot, says that she understands why Mom is upset, but "in today's world, where even young kids have exhibited displays of violence and can be dangerous, it's important for schools to be extra cautious" and "it's essential that schools treat every potential sign of danger as seriously as it could be." She advises Mom to tell her daughter that horror-themed art should be restricted to explicitly Halloween-themed events or assignments only. "To try to keep our schools safe, it requires us all to consider everything, even an art project, more critically."

eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.
Screenshot from a section of eBay UK's r User Privacy Notice.
It reads:
AI model training

When training, testing, and improving generative AI models, we rely primarily on publicly available data. Some public datasets may incidentally include personal data, and in some cases we may also use certain user personal data, such as information about your use of our Services, including the items you list, sell, view, or buy, where we determine it is necessary and proportionate for a specific use (for example, to train AI models that improve product recommendations). Prior to training, we take steps to mitigate potential privacy impacts, such as de-identifying the data or applying other privacy-preserving techniques. In some jurisdictions, the data used for training as described in this section is not considered personal data; where our AI training does involve personal data as defined under applicable law, including in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, the legal basis of our legitimate interest is set out in section 3.4.

See section 6 for more details on your rights. To learn more about specific training use cases and our processing of your personal data for generative AI training purposes, including the right to object to such processing for certain users, visit our Artificial Intelligence at eBay page.

While we're at it, might as well share Tom Baker's perennial masterpiece.
Interview with Baker in Vortex Magazine.

Vortex:What’s your one biggest Doctor Who memory?

Baker: I remember a man stopping me in Oxford Street once, looking at me with absolute incredulity; he couldn’t believe it. He said, ‘Tom Baker?’ A man in his late thirties. I said, ‘Yes’. He said, ‘Tom Baker?’ I said, ‘Yes!’ And he looked at me and in his brain he catapulted back in time and he said, ‘You know, when I was a boy, I was in a home for children; nobody wanted us, you know? It was terrible. And you made Saturday night good.’ And I went to say something to him and I could see him so close to tears that he couldn’t speak. And he shook his head as if to say, ‘Don’t go on, don’t remind me’ and he just did [a thumbs up]. Such a common thing, isn’t it, but suddenly backed up with an expression on his face through his tears that was a knighthood. It was a knighthood. Just thumbs up, meaning it was great, and thanks. It’s incredible, isn’t it? Just a gesture.
