About to go through the delightful process of booking a private flu jab through our local pharmacy, in the sure knowledge that the pharmacist will say "oh, you're entitled to a jab on the NHS, didn't your GP tell you?" for the third year running

Why are so many experiences of interacting with the NHS like this? 🧵

For those in England & Wales who don’t get them on the NHS: private flu & covid jabs are available from today. I’ve just had both at my local pharmacy. £115 for the pair. Yes, that’s expensive, but if you’re a freelancer & don’t get sick pay it’s probably a lot cheaper than taking time off.

Walked past an AI poster yesterday. My partner said "ok, here's a test, you just saw that poster...tell me what the date of the event is." It's a Bonfire Night thing so it's probably either November the Actual Fifth or the Sat after...but still, an actual date on the poster would be nice

Delighted to learn a new Scottish word from this online review for leggings. Even better than "havering"! The hint that the reviewer is a bit tight is welcome character development, despite playing into national stereotypes.
Screenshot from an online review. Reviewer Auds27 gives five stars and says: "I've been swithering about these leggings for ages. Got them in a sale so managed to get them a bit cheaper. Worth every penny!"

The main reason I use Ecosia as my search engine is that it's greener & more ethical than most. So I was dismayed when they started doing "AI overviews". But hey, answers like this are totally worth boiling a lake for.
Screenshot from Ecosia search. I've typed "how often should you dye your hair" and the AI overview has replied

"The recommended frequency for dyeing hair is every 6 to 8 weeks for demi-permanent or permanent dyes, while semi-permanent dyes can be used slightly less often, around every 4 weeks."

How to visit an art museum with someone who isn't used to visiting art museums:
Two social media posts by @pan_juho (Translated from Japanese):

"I love going to art museums, but when I go with someone who's not used to them, if I say, 'If you were a great thief, tell me later which one you'd steal,' they end up looking the exhibits pretty seriously, and that makes me happy.

"Whether you steal something you like or something that seems valuable -> it opens up endless conversation based on what vou liked about it or where you saw value in it, so it's also great as an easy icebreaker for chats after visiting the museum."

The snobbishness about this comes in part from the fact you can no longer pay all your bills doing a minimum wage job. If you work 35hrs a week you should be able to pay rent, pay utilities, buy food & have a little left over for a few beers on a Friday. This never used to be a controversial view.

I know I've said this dozens of times before, but: the NHS could make the patient experience a thousand times better just by communicating better. Such a cheap, achievable way to improve, such value for money compared to other changes. An open goal just sitting there.

Today's unanswerable survey question: describing the size of my parcel, where none of the options are true. There's “smaller than a shoebox” and “bigger than a shoebox”, but the parcel I received isn't either of those, being very much an actual shoebox.
YouGov

How big was this parcel? (Please select the answer that best applies)

Small enough to fit through a letterbox (e.g. 25cm x 35cm x 2.5cm)

Bigger than a letterbox but smaller than a shoebox (25cm x 35cm x 12cm)

Bigger than a shoebox but smaller than a small carry on suitcase (35cm x 45cm x 20cm)

Bigger than a small carry on suitcase, but small enough for one person to deliver on their own

Requires more than one person to deliver

Don’t know

In defence of old people who can't put seatbelts on: nobody ever sits in the back of their own car, so they drastically underestimate how fiddly the seatbelts in the back are, and that's before you factor in having to politely push your fellow passengers' arse overhang out of the way

On the left: a gray cat sitting in a window, next to a desk, with a glimpse of brick wall outside. On the right, an open doorway into a cozy living room, showing a sliver of a second window set at a 90 degree angle to the first.
