the only reason I was able to delay by a couple years the purchase of a minivan and use a cargo bike instead was the existence of a segregated bike lane from my place to the kids' daycare, some 6km away

This might be one of the worst AI generated maps of Ottawa I've seen. How hard is it to use a screenshot of an actual map?

My most radical take is that TOD is a scam invented by single-family home preservationists to find a scientifically sound way to concentrate "those people" is specific areas outside of where real people live, and urbanists have embraced it because it's better than nothing.

“Of those, 1,283 registrations are from non-residents, representing 1.5 per cent of total registrations,” Chenier said. This is barely measureable. It is not a serious proposal to address a real issue for parents.

If I was running for mayor of Ottawa, I would propose a referendum: status quo or de-amalgamation. It really is the only question that matters in this "city".

Dear @en.ottawa.ca, the next time a large event like Nuit Blanche takes place in Byward Market, the streets need to be closed to drivers. It's absolutely ludicrous to invite thousands of people into one neighbourhood, and still allow cars.

I do wonder why business owners are not clamouring for policies that are shown to work everywhere. Instead, they seem to continue to support a status quo while complaining that it's not working. Is it ignorance? Is it a combination of cognitive bias? Is a conspiracy by car and oil and gas companies?

My contribution to the helmet discourse is to note that there is a strong inverse correlation between helmet use and cycling. There is no real-world evidence that you can convince lots of people to ride bikes and wear helmets. God bless you for trying, but I don’t think it will work.

Urbanist Philomena Cunk. There's a powerful tribe of elders known as NIMBYs, which stands for "Not In My Back Yard". They're a group of people who believe in saving the planet with wind farms, solar panels, and affordable housing, just as long as they're built completely invisibly in Narnia.

Is there anything a: stopping Kent from being a 30kph street and b: stopping the city from posting signage, at heavy intervals, that cars must share the lane with bikes as this is established law if a biker feels unsafe on the kerb. Doesn't make me that much safer but it drives a point home.

These homes on Sherwood Drive look normal, sure. But did you know they’re the site of the only residential zoning appeal in Ottawa to reach the Supreme Court of Canada? It’s a wild story of secret council meetings, expropriations, fake highways—and a side of mustard. 🧵Thread…

Where was this energy at council last week? $20 million of the $30 million RTO plan is going to expanding a suburban park and ride. No additional service for major downtown routes like the 6, 7, and 14. No significant urban bus priority measures like bus lanes.

This crew from 'Patch and Seal' blew a bunch of loose dirt, sand, and broken glass from the parking lot onto the bike lane and sidewalk and then left. They told me "it's the city's problem now." Well, they've been reported to the city, let's see what they think about that.

I took this photo on my street nine years ago, encapsulating all of the things I love about raising a kid downtown. The house is non-profit housing. The stoop is how I greet my neighbours every day. Living close to other people fosters friendship and safety. Feels like Sesame Street.
