What does it take to move 1000 people? Better infrastructure supporting mobility choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money, etc). Graphic via Seattle Subway based on a Sydney graphic I spread around years ago.
How do you move 1000 people? One link train with four cars, 15 buses, or 625 cars requiring over 5 acres of parking at both start and destination.

I recently submitted a Letter to the Editor to my city’s newspaper, making the case for supporting active infrastructure within their 300-word limit. My hope was simple. If just one person sees this topic in a new way, it’s worth it. And I’d encourage other advocates to do the same where they live.

The fact that CBC was too cowardly to film this is indicative of a much bigger problem in media. When layoffs come, they tend to target journalists who are "problems" for management, who question authority. This is what you lose when you only keep the journalists who are deferential to authority:

Somebody just sent this to me via an email listserve and it is SUCH a zinger. ABSOLUTELY TRUTH RIGHT HERE
If you are using undocumented immigrants' tax records to find and kidnap them, then it was never about them paying taxes.
If you are showing up at their place of employment, then it was never about them not working.
If you are showing up at courthouses, then it was never about getting them to "do it the right way."
If you are kidnapping women and children, then it was never about criminals.
If you're refusing to give them due process, then it was never about the constitution.
If you're spending billions to do this, then it was never about the economy.
And if you're doing all this in the name of a 34 time convicted felon, then it was never about following the law.

Broadly, planners need to reclaim our authority over urban public space from traffic engineers who are monomaniacally obsessed with maximizing motorist convenience and utilities companies that don’t care about urban design or quality of life. Further, we need to fund street tree planting and care.
Folsom street in the Mission. Large street trees and four story buildings create a pleasant sense of enclosure. Wide sidewalks and bike lanes make walking and biking safe and pleasant. The buildings are largely unremarkable.
