I've been reflecting a lot lately about how safe streets is a form of community caregiving. It's the crosswalk, the sidewalk network, the accessible curb ramps, a bus stop with a shelter, a protected bike lane, a slower and safe intersection.

new from @sp-ainsworth.bsky.social & me, a back of the ✉️ estimate in @ggwash.org: 🚌&🚲lane projects save 1-2 human lives per year, & create societal savings of $88-$111M/year, just in avoided crashes. We don't capture every project or ancillary health benefits, so this could be an underestimate.
Chart showing DDOT’s bike lanes have had gigantic safety benefits, reducing total crashes by 40% and injurious crashes by 60% on the corridors where they are installed. These 24 bike lanes have saved an estimated 1-2 human lives per year.

DC Budget update - I added in the BSA and various supporting legislation. I appreciate all of the feedback I've gotten so far. Are there other data sets or ways to sort the data that would make analyzing the budget easier? Drop a comment below! (1/2)
A webpage titled "Budget Legislation" from the DC FY27 Budget site. Introductory text explains that the Mayor's FY2027 budget proposal arrives at the DC Council as four companion bills. Four cards are displayed in a 2×2 grid: (1) Budget Support Act (BSA) — FY27 bill, 273 pages, 87 subtitles, covering statutory amendments for policy changes, fee updates, and fund transfers. (2) Local Budget Act (LBA) — FY27 bill, 44 pages, $21.2B total, 129 agencies, the main appropriations bill. (3) Federal Portion Budget Request Act (FPBRA) — FY27 bill, 10 pages, $993.4M total request, 13 payments, covering DC Courts and federal-dollar entities. (4) FY26 Revised Local Budget (Supplemental) — FY26 bill, 16 pages, net adjustment of -$119.2M, covering mid-year revisions. Each card includes "View details" and "View PDF" links.

Being into cats feels so debasing. You give everything over to this animal — time, labor, money — but when you want them to sit next to you, they refuse and jump away. When they finally sit on your lap, you sit motionless to the point of physical pain, afraid to disturb them. Humiliating.

D.C.’s speed cameras are catching super violators. Most have Va. and Md. tags.
A lack of cross-border cooperation with Virginia and Maryland has allowed habitual speeders from those areas to get away with thousands of dollars in unpaid fines.

Cameras only issue tickets when drivers are going 10+ mph over the posted speed limit. The solution is to reinvest the funds back into street safety, e.g., a safe street redesign at that specific location. The current Mayor has made it her choice to sweep the funds into the general fund instead. 👎
