Absolutely no better way to start off the #weekwithoutdriving than to hop on the D44 and talk about bus transit with Councilmembers @janeese4dc.bsky.social and @elissasilverman.bsky.social! Thank you so much for recognizing the needs of nondrivers in DC. @ggwash.org

For the DC Week Without Driving, @janeese4dc.bsky.social joined @ggwash.org organizers (and @elissasilverman.bsky.social) for a bus ride from Petworth to downtown. JLG emphasized her desire to get projects like the Georgia Ave dedicated lane done quickly: “We don’t need to study the study.”

One of the lessons I learned over and over again during my time as an ANC is just how many good policies fail due to poor implementation. Not in a dramatic way, either! Just because there’s a pervasive lack of accountability for making sure basic things happen. It transcends any particular agency.

Traffic volumes could decrease up to 11 percent, representing almost 65,000 fewer weekday car trips; transit use would jump by almost 25 percent in the most optimistic scenario; and people who still decided to drive would save up to 24 hours of time lost in traffic.

My trip to the bank yesterday morning turned into an inadvertent tour of bus "berms." If we don't have a plan in place for clearing bus stops, bus riders in our region may face severe limits on their ability to get around for not just days but *weeks* to come.

The reason our housing shortage is now seen as a crisis is not just bc of data — the data looked bad for years before this became a national dialogue. It’s also bc millennials, entering middle age feeling the effects of society’s failures, are now in positions of power & shaping that dialogue.
