Not surprising that the driver that ran a stop sign and aggressively passed two parents biking has a pretty established record of dangerous driving.

i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

the fact that the NTSB is conducting a federal safety investigation of the helicopter crash, but nobody is going to do anything about the original deadly car crash, really shows just how few fucks our country gives about every day traffic violence that kills 40k people every year

When you experience a catastrophic crash, it is a secondary trauma to learn that auto insurance does not protect you from financial ruin. When my 1yo son was killed in 2010, the liability minimum in OR was $25,000 (still is!) and our health insurer was first in line to collect the settlement.

That’s because helmets are not rated for car crashes, only for falling off a bike, so telling people a helmet will protect them when a 7000 lb auto smashes their body is just a lie. Traffic calming, smaller cars, fix blind spots, infrastructure, consequences for drivers who run over humans.

Not sure if there's been less discussion of it or if I've just missed it, but with two more pedestrian deaths in the last week of July, DC's count of traffic fatalities has already surpassed last year's total, and is on pace to beat every prior year of the Bowser admin. _except_ 2023-4.
Bar chart of DC traffic fatalities by year since 1995.
After rising to their highest level since 2007 in 2023, and matching it in 2024, fatalities dropped to a 14-year low in 2025.
However, traffic fatalities are already higher in 2026 than all of 2025, and are on pace to be the third-highest in 20 years, 45, behind only 2023 and 2024.

My personal unpopular op: Politicians that say they care about traffic safety but aren’t hustling to approve safer street designs, reduce driving speeds, rein in truck bloat or incentivize bike/walk/transit are performative/unserious. E-moto/e-bike regulation isn’t even a bandaid on car culture.

CW-bigotry. Last night, the Ward 5 Leadership Council (which includes of ex-elected reps from Ward 5) sent an email to a number of people (including myself) full of ramblings and allegations about the elections, Free DC, and the Free DC Slate. They also made some incredibly bigoted remarks.
image has text from an email: Orchestrating the 2024 DC Election
The one person one vote principle has essentially been overshadowed by what is ultimately becoming a caste system. The face of Project Free DC is black and brown, but the decision-makers and the at-large committee members are largely East Indian and Euro-Americans.
There is a thin veneer of black leaders like Phil Pannell, but the At-Large winners are largely East Indians and Euro-Americans and the committee men and women are largely disgruntled community folks who are easily led. The candidates and many of their followers had no idea what happened to them. The dark money usurped the individual's voice in lieu of a form of "group speak" which is ultimately a subtle form of voter suppression.
