Ward 7 resident Sehree Mickel knew something was wrong when her Prime packages were arriving slower than her friends in other parts of DC. So she filed a complaint with our office. Her complaint launched an investigation that led to $7.25 million in refunds for her and thousands of her neighbors.

Our settlement requires Meta to adopt sweeping child safety protections on Facebook and Instagram. We are setting a new standard for how social media platforms keep kids safe online.
Child safety features Meta is required to implement on Facebook and Instagram:

Two-hour daily time limit for both platforms.

Mandatory pauses after 15 minutes of continuous use to interrupt endless scrolling.

Nighttime blocks to restrict children’s access to feeds from 12am-6am and
silence notifications from 10pm-7am.

Limited school-time access for children by eliminating push notifications on weekdays from 8am-3pm during the school year.

Robust age verification measures.

Stronger parental supervision controls.

Safer, age-appropriate content controls
to safeguard against bullying, content promoting eating disorders, and content related to suicide and self-harm.

Limits on social comparison features, including beauty filters and visible “like” counts that are linked to poor mental health.

Oversight by an independent auditor.
