Had a lovely belated birthday celebration with my family today! This year was certainly the most unusual birthday I have ever had, spending it alone in Chicago. The big gift from my parents which I maybe knew of in advance (shhh) was the exquisite KATO CZ set, something I’ve wanted for years now.

Everyone talking about the new Airos, which are great, but for a very certain group of annoying people (me) the biggest upgrade is the bike racks. No more front wheel removal and the hooks are twice to size to accommodate MTB/Gravel rims and tires much more easily.

and since I forgot to post about it, on day one I rode from Glenwood Springs to Aspen via the Rio Grande trail, the former D&RGW branch line that was abandoned in the late 90’s. Lots of neat remnants of it still remain, although it’s a pity it never became the proposed commuter rail

Working on installing DCC in this Overland brass South Shore steeplecab for David, my Canadian client tonight. While a beautifully running model, the first step in the conversion is adding extra pickups so all wheels can pick up power. A little styrene and bronze wire worked a treat here!

More from Sunday, all the grade for the CPR/CN mainline is in as well as the base for the higher Milwaukee Electric line on the new section of layout. Eventually this table will be moved behind the more finished part, but this makes doing the rearmost work first far far easier

Back again working on my Canadian client David’s layout this weekend. Today I installed the NCE DCC system (good riddance Digitrax), ballasted more track, programmed the turntable, played trains just a little and did a bunch of other odd jobs. Some big stuff to come tomorrow…

Been working on this Walthers turntable kit over the past couple days for a client, I can see why people say these suck. Had to sand a solid half mm off the total length of the bridge to make it spin freely, the little wheels are terribly molded too. Turning out good despite this though
