Optimism isn't just for humans: Bonobos tend to behave optimistically after hearing laughter #socsciresearch #socialpsych New work by Erica Cartmill and colleagues. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
 We primed bonobos with conspecific laughter and then asked whether they were more likely to treat an ambiguous stimulus as if it were positive. Subjects (n = 4) were first trained to approach rewarded (black) stimuli and skip unrewarded (white) stimuli. We then presented occasional ambiguous (grey) stimuli. Bonobos approached ambiguous stimuli to search for rewards more often after hearing laughter. Our results suggest that hearing laughter induces positive emotions and may thus bias bonobos’ decision making, including foraging or search behavior. While only apes produce human-like laughter, several other non-human animals have contagious play vocalizations. These vocalizations may lead other animals to anticipate positive outcomes, revealing commonalities in the role of positive emotion in behavior and cognition across species.

They keep using this line and it's nonsense for many reasons, but also, if that's truly the case, there are only about a dozen "fraudsters" per state: the insurers. No one else could benefit from this particular no-claims "fraud." So where are the prosecutions of health insurers? 🤔

Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.
More recently in Craighead County — symbolically, at least, Ground Zero for the state’s attack on libraries, thanks to Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) — the library announced several changes to circulation as it relates to minors. In a Facebook post, the library listed a number of changes to library policies, including:

Minors are prohibited from using the self-checkout kiosks;
Children under 13 years old may only check out materials from the designated children’s collection, while minors age 13-17 can only check out from the children or teen sections;
Minors may not check out DVDs at all; and
Minors are prohibited from entering or purchasing anything from the Friends of the Library Bookstore.

First use of "the deets" in a federal circuit court decision. 1st Cir., by Judge Thompson whose decisions frequently adopt a relaxed tone. www.ca1.uscourts.gov/sites/ca1/fi...
THOMPSON, Circuit Judge. Instituto Médico del Norte, today's debtor/appellant, has been trying to repay a loan since the 1980s. But Instituto and Greengift Capital (the current loan-holder and today's appellee) are in a fierce battle about what, exactly, Instituto's got to fork over. We'll fill in the deets shortly, but the SparkNotes is this. In a recent adversary proceeding1 in bankruptcy court, Instituto tried to invoke a 1991 agreement to explain why it owed less on the loan balance than Greengift (and its predecessor loan-holders) said it did. Greengift. The bankruptcy court sided with

Screenshot of the top of a whistleblower disclosure titled "USPS Rushed Implementation of New and Untested IT Systems Threatens U.S. Ballot Mail Delivery." Addressed to Senator Blumenthal, the first point details how the whistleblower has "significant concerns about the USPS's secretive, rushed, chaotic, and fundamentally flawed process for the creation and implementation of an entirely new and untested set of IT systems" intended for the 2026 midterms.
