Nevertheless, it does show us something important: people like Burnham even more when they’re exposed to him; many of his core themes & arguments carry people and can push up his numbers and vote share. The ownership agenda esp - if delivered - could be really powerful for him.

Ok, some obvious and important methodological caveats before Lab folk get too excited. Obviously we are forcibly exposing people to Burnham’s speech here, unfiltered and uncontested. In reality, most will not pay that sort of attention! Plus of course persuasion effects will decay. But…

I like the debate about England's PISA scores, and agree with various things in this article. However the author argues that immigrant family "drive" can't explain England's success since second-gen immigrant pupils outperform natives. Imho there's a logical gap that is vague and untested here.

Stephen Bush, in the FT today writes that Labour “has now produced two governments whose response to acts of thuggery and intimidation is to reiterate that perhaps the thugs have a point”. A key question of political analysis is why Lab (and/or the British state) can’t/won’t be more decisive (x/?)

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

With the big caveat that these are vote (& turnout) recalls, the exit polls suggest that the vast majority of gains for the AfD came from mobilizing former non-voters and converting CDU voters. This would be consistent with the aggregate changes in vote shares & big increase in turnout.

Amazing
In the week after the June 24 primary election for mayor, I was determined to meet with voters in conservative neighborhoods where
Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (D-Astoria), a democratic socialist, had performed surprisingly well. In a Howard Beach precinct where Mamdani won, I met a couple who, despite being conservative, voted for Mamdani because they bizarrely thought he had run "to the right" of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and also believed he was Italian-American, as his name ended in an
"'" and he was from Astoria.
When I dug further into why they thought he was running "to the right" of Cuomo, they noted that it was because he discussed "prices" and
"cost of living," as Donald Trump had in 2024.
They both voted for Trump. They had a hard time believing Mamdani was a socialist because they believed socialists "support making everything more expensive. 1"

Many myths debunked in this paper. Paper finds that: -faculty partisanship has no effect on students -students ideologically sort into majors; majors don’t affect partisanship -faculty partisanship is uncorrelated with how left/rightwing course content is micah-baum.github.io/files/baum-e...
DO FACULTY AFFECT STUDENT PARTISANSHIP?*
Micah Y. Baum*
Joaquín Endara
Annaliese Paulson®
Abstract
We study whether Democratic college professors make their students more liberal. We link voter data to salary records from 33 state flagships and show that faculty skew Democratic, especially in the humanities and social sciences. We then use student transcripts from one flagship to estimate causal effects. Students become more liberal during college regardless of major and sort toward ideologically similar instructors. Exploiting plausibly random variation in when instructors teach courses, we find no effect of faculty partisanship on student partisanship. Text analysis shows exposure to liberal topics reflects student demand rather than instructor supply, leaving little room for indoctrination.

The Small-Area Global Elections (SAGE)
Dataset
Noah Dasanaike*
June 30, 2026
Conditionally Accepted at Nature Scientific Data
Abstract
Cross-national research on electoral behavior has been bounded by the granularity of comparative election data. Existing archives aggregate to constituency or country level, omit spatial information, or restrict coverage to a small set of well-documented democracies. The Small-Area Global Elections (SAGE) dataset collects lower-house parliamentary and presidential returns for 110 countries and territories at the smallest unit each electoral authority publishes, geocodes the units, and harmonizes party and candidate identifiers across languages. For most countries the unit is a polling station with fewer than a thousand voters; the full dataset carries roughly ten billion votes cast across more than eight million units. The dataset is openly available in tabular and spatial formats, with companion R and Python packages providing direct access. SAGE supports spatial analyses of electoral behavior across democracies and hybrid regimes at a granularity not previously available for cross-national comparison.Map
