At an invitation-only gathering in Italy, white supremacists mapped out strategies to target rural America while local press coverage vanishes www.confrontthehate.com/p/white-nati...
As economic pressures gut local newsrooms across the country, white nationalist figures see an untapped opening: stepping into media deserts where there are few journalists left to sound the alarm.

“Local media has been dying all over America, which means that there’s essentially no real way to hold local governments accountable—and they can do whatever they want,” Kevin DeAnna told an invitation-only gathering of approximately 50 white nationalists in Rome.

Breaking into a broad smile, he excitedly added: “You should be fantasizing about this. This is a good thing.”

When the people you hire to do a 3-day rush job vetting just before launching the campaign recommend that you pay for more in-depth on-the-ground vetting and oppo research due to how much they found in just three days, is it good to ignore them and never reply to their email or do any more vetting?
“In the weeks prior to Platner’s launch in August 2025, a research firm hired by his campaign completed a three-day vetting of the candidate that turned up dozens of his Reddit posts, among other problematic material, according to a person who worked on the campaign as well as correspondence reviewed by POLITICO. The initial findings led the firm to recommend the campaign pay for “on-the-ground research” and a deeper dive into Platner’s digital footprint, warning that his “rising profile” made the discoveries a growing risk to his candidacy, the correspondence shows.
The offer of further research was made only to Moraff, as he was the point of contact for the research firm, the former campaign worker said, with the rest of Platner’s team not included on the email exchanges. But Moraff never responded, despite repeated outreach from the firm, so the offer went unanswered, the correspondence shows.”

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:
Third, faculty salaries are falling even if we statistically control for faculty rank and institution. By our analysis of National Center for Education Statistics data, tenured and tenure-track salaries are down 10 percent in real terms since 2016 and are lower today than they were in 2002; nontenured faculty salaries are down 4 percent since 2016 and are at 2002 levels today.

To put this plainly: Suppose sharply increased teaching loads enabled institutions to cut one out of every seven full-time faculty. (That’s roughly what we saw last year in severe cuts announced at West Virginia, Western Illinois, and St. Cloud State Universities.) The associated savings in salary and benefits even through such drastic action would amount to less than 2.5 percent of total institutional expenditures for the typical university.

The upshot? If you think higher education has a cost problem, squeezing more teaching out of faculty is not the first place you should look.
