The Netherlands is rolling its own software and services after U.S. sanctions took Microsoft off the table
When the U.S. imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, it also meant that its chief prosecutor lost access to Microsoft services, forcing the Dutch government to make alternative plans.

Not many years ago the great Wilt Idema told us that academics should not be allowed to publish more than 5 pages of writing a year. (Yes, I do get the irony, but also, he had a point).

This is also true and important in teaching, and I hope we teachers find a way to really valorise the work of students who are not afraid to search for their own voice in their writing so they can see one more reason to avoid using LLMs for writing and proofreading.

Does the project involve any work that could be interpreted as promoting DEIA, climate change research, or non-compliant to any Presidential Executive Orders?

The humanities are *also* about knowledge and "content"—historical, linguistic, literary, artistic etc., not just skills—which west-centric colleagues think are the "new" essence of the humanities. In area studies we know too well how people with "skills" write on places of which they know fuck all.

From the LinkedIn of an academic I have a lot of respect for.
Last week, I emailed a (previously?) respectable journal in my field to let them know that a recent article I had been hoping to cite had hallucinated hashtag#AI references and that the author should be asked to update their article with credible citations to support their arguments.

Someone from the admin team responded to say, basically, that they weren't going to do anything about it.

I feel like this is how academic credibility dies. The main recourse I have in the face of AI slop is academic papers. If you can't trust journal articles to contain established evidence (even though the system has never been perfect) then I don't know how we can make policy recommendations, advise NGOs and charities, design credible experiments, etc., etc.

My only hope is that this is the trigger that begins to kill the profiteering publishing system and the 'quantity over quality' performance criteria under which we all are drowning - but I have a feeling that all of academia will need an overhaul to maintain any kind of credibility.
