A lot of people out there still can’t grasp a basic fact of our time: there is no effective good-faith engagement with a bad-faith attack.

The starting point for any discussion of declining public trust in higher education in the US has to be that since the McCarthy Era, the center-right has systematically misled the public about the purpose and practices of higher education as well as underfunded it.

I do have some leeway for Chow’s position, in that Ford has made it all but impossible for cities to start big projects with any confidence they won’t just be canceled on a whim. But still, the low-key affect has been a political liability.

It’s obvious the old wretch meant to say that gas prices are a small price to pay compared to the nuking of LA or SD; it’s just that his muddled brain gets the syntax tangled. But, yeah, he has lost the benefit of the doubt at this point so I can see what people are getting at.

I think it’s very revealing of who the Labour Party are now that they want to criminalise this discussion. I’m somewhat ambivalent on the motion itself but the response to it is showing what some mainstream press/politicians consider unacceptable to talk about. www.thenational.scot/news/2660950...

From a historical perspective it's a genuinely strange state of affairs that the Church of England turns out to be too woke for much of the modern right. But really it just feels like: having a consistent moral code that demands taking Lessers and Outgroup seriously is impossible for populist right.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

It’s been two years since Ontario Place West Island was destroyed for a planned private spa. Hundreds of trees were cut down - here’s a snapshot of the many species who lost habitat. 🧵
Side-by-side comparison of a landscape on the Toronto waterfront. In one scene, an island is covered in trees reflected in a still channel of water. The other image of the same place shows a barren stretch land with a pile of rubble in the centre.

If the lessons Democrats (& democrats) draw from DOGE is “right idea, wrong implementation,” we are doomed. Everyone involved in the unprecedented crime that was DOGE needs to go to jail forever, & Democrats need to rebuild all of the programs & agencies first, not do digital management consulting 🤦‍♂️

Here is the thing, right, here is the thing (this is me getting a run up): the concept of the modern nation state and citizenship thereof is a relatively recent cultural phenomenon and we actually don't have great terms to conceptualise it as distinct from what we used to mean by "nationality".
