There’s something liberating about seeing a city from the saddle of an OV-fiets. Yesterday took us across Rotterdam on those familiar blue-and-yellow bikes, with a visit to the Fenix Museum; crossing bridges, rolling through neighbourhoods, and following our curiosity wherever it happened to lead.

I cycled to Efteling, the largest theme park in the Netherlands, last week. Of course they have a huge bike parking area, fully staffed to check your bike in and out but only just seen that to encourage fewer car journeys if you cycle to the theme park 7 times in a year you get a free bike bag.

Outside Delft Station, the absence of car noise reveals a richer urban soundtrack: trams gliding, bells ringing, birds chirping, laughter echoing, and bicycles creaking by. In place of roaring engines, the human-scale soundscape brings the street to life: so serene, yet simultaneously full of life.

This is an absolutely horrific "road safety" ad from the 1980s in the UK. Our approach has not changed much since then. If our roads are designed such that one "false move" can get a child killed by a driver, then maybe we should re-think our infrastructure? Source: playingout.net/files/resear...

Eerste van der Helstraat, Amsterdam in 1978 and today
A before-and-after comparison of Eerste van der Helststraat, Amsterdam. The top image, in black and white and dating from 1978, shows a busy street gridlocked with motor traffic — multiple cars fill the road from kerb to kerb. The bottom colour image shows the same street today: completely transformed into a tree-lined pedestrian street, with mature trees creating a green canopy, market stalls and colourful café fronts with orange bunting on the right, and people walking and cycling freely in the car-free space.
