What a difference a road redesign can make! This redesign shows that a fairer (more space for cyclists and pedestrians), safer, and greener road design is possible, while still providing space for all modalities. 📍Socrateslaan, Utrecht NL

Today, the long distance cycling route between Dutch cities Woerden and Utrecht was officially opened. Routes like this make it possible to cycle smoothly and comfortably between cities and villages, making it more attractive for commuters to choose the bike over the car. youtu.be/6_ev5h9PHOY

Utrecht 🇳🇱 is once again heavily visited by tourists from all corners of the world. Could it be the car-free, pedestrian-friendly city center that makes the city so attractive to many people?! After all, people often go on vacation to see and experience things they don't have at home...

Update on the #LEGO Road Bike: Building it took up most of the morning and was really fun. It's nice to see how LEGO used very specific existing parts for this bike, like dragon horns from the Ninjago sets for the handlebars and minifigure hockey sticks to form the rails on the saddle.

For my work, I visited an apartment complex under construction. There is still a lot to be done in and around the homes, but in the basement of the complex, the double bicycle racks are already installed for future residents! 👌🏼

Time to get melancholic 🥹 After 8 years and countless times cycling with our boys to their primary school, through wind and rain, in freezing and tropical temperatures, todays schoolrun was the last one. This routine made them confident cyclists and me a very proud dad! 🥰

Rethinking fair use of public space. Three former parking spaces, previously the privilege of three car owners. Now, each spot accommodates at least ten bicycle owners. And there is even room for a picnic table.

XXL cargo bike setups are a game-changer for supplying shops in city centers. They are sustainable, don't block half the street, and look cool too!

As of today, the speed limit on 270 roads in Utrecht has been lowered to 30 km/h. An important first step in improving road safety, although for now, it only involves new signage and the installation of speed cameras. The necessary redesign of many roads will take place over the coming years.

When the Dafne Schippers Bridge in Utrecht opened in 2017, the area on the other side was still empty land. Today, crossing the bridge means cycling right through a brand-new, high density residential neighborhood. For its residents, a direct link to the 'old' city lies literally on their doorstep.

Vredenburg in the heart of Utrecht has one of the busiest cycleways in the Netherlands. With private cars excluded, it's reserved for buses, bikes and pedestrians and it moves tens of thousands of people every day through the city centre. Less space for cars, more space for people.

Excellent blog by @bicycledutch.bsky.social, describing and visually showing how Utrecht has changed in a relatively short time. Important takeaway for car-centric cities saying "but we're not Utrecht": Utrecht wasn't either! But then it showed (and still shows) that change is possible!

Quote from the Bicycle Dutch blog about 17 years of change in Utrecht:

"Like many cities, Utrecht spent much of the second half of the twentieth century adapting itself to the car. Streets were widened, canals were filled in to create roads, and public space increasingly became space for moving or storing cars."

Mature trees with "kissing canopies" not only enrich city streetscapes, they are also crucial for cities in managing summer heatwaves. The cooling effect and shade they provide make the difference between livable and unlivable streets for everybody using them.

🚲 Cycling on top of a highway 🚲 When Utrecht began expanding on the west side of the city, the highway formed a huge barrier between the old and new part of the city. To connect the two parts, the highway disappeared underground and made way for an elongated park with play areas and a bike path.

Today, my children and I cycled in temperatures approaching 40 degrees. Temperatures I never experienced as a child. It is quite frightening to think that, when they are the same age as I am now, they will have gotten used to these (and probably even higher) temperatures... #heat #heatwave

Smart located, user-friendly bicycle parking facilities are essential to make cycling the default mode for people. Amsterdam now goes big on one of the user-friendly aspects, extending the free parking period in several bike parkings from 24 hours to 7 days!
