Sound down! I had Merlin app listen to this blue jay as I hadn't heard this vocalization. Merlin said 'Wild Turkey'. Blue jays have advanced vocal learning capabilities & large repertoires, they can produce surprising vocalizations including domestic/wild turkey gobbles & clucks. #birds

The weather skunk says it is, or has been, raining. It's so nice to see a skunk around again after so many years of no skunks. I doubt my neighbors feel the same way. 🤣 #mammals
A black and white night photo from my camera trap showing part of my garden with small landscaping rocks to the bottom left. Dirt, bark and leaf litter to the bottom right of the frame. Various plants, shrubs and flowers are in the middle and background. It has been raining and a striped skunk is in the photo, broadside to the camera, its head towards the left of the frame. Its fur is clumped in places as it is wet. Overall the skunk looks soggy but fit and healthy.

One of the mule deer triplets taking a break in amongst my flowers and plants this afternoon. I went out to refill the birdbath and there s/he was lying down, just watching me. I had the phone in my pocket so I spoke quietly to her as I took a few photos then left her alone. #mammals
A mule deer fawn from this year, no more spots but still smaller than mama. She, or he, is lying down on the dirt/leaf litter and bark in amongst some plants and flowers. She/he has huge ears somewhat like a mule and that's why they're called mule deer. I just looked out the window and she/he is still there.

Quail Lake, Colorado Springs. The paddle board club had a halloween inspired LED illuminated paddle around the lake under a full moon this evening.
Zoomed in cell phone photo showing part of Quail Lake with trees and mountains in the background. There are lots of people dressed as witches on paddle boards on the lake. Some of the paddle boards have LED lights on them.A long exposure photo showing the paddle board lights as the paddle boarders moved slowly around on the lake this evening. The moon casts light onto the water in a swathe of light just left of center in the frame. It was a full moon tonight.Intentional camera movement as the paddle boarders moved around the lake during a long exposure photo. You know me, I do love lights and patterns.

Sporadic meteor over Cheyenne Mountain early this morning. We can see the red lights on the mountain antennas. I was testing this camera and am very happy with it. It's a security camera I've modified.
A color night photo that shows two trees, one on each side of the frame in the foreground along with another tree top in the center bottom of the frame. Cheyenne mountain is in the background with its antenna lights illuminated red and white. A meteor streaks across the sky in the top third of the frame going diagonally down.

Spent the day at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo with family. Great time all around and I fed this giraffe. The new giraffe center is open now so the giraffes have a whole new area to explore - it's huge.
A different view of a giraffe. It is extremely close up and is just its open mouth and tongue as it ate leaves off the branch I was feeding it. The zoo sells leaves and lettuce to feed the giraffes, it was a lot of fun.The giraffe I was feeding, it stripped the leaves off the branch in one swift move, I didn't expect that. Well done, Giraffe. It had obviously done this many times before and knew exactly how to strip the leaves in seconds and move onto the next person offering food (legit zoo sold food).Tons of fun. Lovely zoo.

I saw this black bear go down the drive so I quickly checked this camera, terrible lighting at this time of day - it's very challenging for the camera where I have it. I have it here for night photos but it was a treat to see it in person and have it on camera too. Stay safe, Bear. #mammals
An evening color photo showing part of my garden with small landscaping rocks in the foreground and various plants, shrubs and flowers in the middle and background. A black bear is very close to the camera on the right side of the frame, it's lying down with its head towards the left side of the frame, its nose is in-between its two front paws. This camera does well in all lighting conditions but this is very challenging for it with such bright background at this time of day and quite dark under the plants and yew tree here. The same spot in my garden only now the black bear is standing up, broadside to the camera with its nose to the ground, sniffing for something. The camera did the best it could in these really challenging lighting conditions- very bright background and dark foreground. I'm surprised it did this well.Same spot in the garden, this time the bear is lying down its head towards the right side of the screen. Its mouth is open and we can see some of its teeth. It is very friend shaped. The lighting isn't great but good enough to see it quite well. I love bear.

Black capped chickadee - missing tail due to fright molt. The tail feathers detach easily under sudden pressure/grab, maybe from escaping a predator like a cat. The molt happens instantly. It can still fly but loses some fine steering, balance & aerial agility. It can still eat as normal. #birds

Composite of 8 photos showing the lightning we saw last night, using the dirty window filter & cropped in. I do enjoy a good lightning storm and have been extremely close to several bolts that really got my attention...FAST! One huge bolt was so bright & close I lost my vision for a minute or so.
A long exposure night photo composite showing the lightning we got around 9:50pm 18 September 2026 all in one frame. There's part of a large tree in the right corner and various trees and telephone poles in the photo. The lightning bolts are in the background. The tree leaves are a bit blurry as it was windy and the camera is taking continuous 30 second photos so it catches their movement.

Met this guy when I went to fill the water bowls for the night shift wildlife. Buck mule deer with antlers in velvet, though some of the velvet on one antler has been left hanging on left side. #mammals While he was here the 3 fawn triplets walked by too, they've lost their spots now.
A day cell phone photo showing a buck mule deer looking towards me and the camera. He has his tongue out and curled up to his nose. His antlers are in velvet, some of the velvet on one of the antlers has come off and is hanging down. He's really quite large around the neck and body. If deer had football positions he'd be a linebacker. I love him so.Same buck mule deer from the first photo, he's turned his head a bit to the side of his body and is licking his fur. There's a wooden fence behind him and grass, shrubs and weeds on the ground along with some concrete pieces.

Productive morning. Covid shot ✅ Flu shot ✅ My T-shirt made it look like a hat then eyes so of course I added a mouth. The pharmacist couldn't stop laughing when I showed him. He said it was a first for him in all his years of giving shots. 🤣
A close up shot of the top of my arm with two white rings that are used when you get shots. Seeing my T-shirt up with these two rings made it look like a black hat and two eyes so I added a mouth in red. Might as well have some fun when getting vaccinated.

Winter is coming. Soon the raccoons will have their winter coats and their sizes will dramatically increase. Though this one is already pretty big. In other news, it appears we only have a couple of hummingbirds here now all the others have left to complete their migration South. I will miss them.
A black and white night photo showing part of my garden. There are small landscaping rocks in the foreground with plants, shrubs and flowers in the middle and background. A raccoon is sitting down, looking away from the camera, in the middle of the frame. It looks large though he or she assures me the camera adds 10 pounds. Its little raccoon ears are visible as is part of its thick bushy, black-ringed tail.

Walking the dogs today, dogs sat as they saw two of the mule deer triplets so we treated them as we do and expected them to walk on but they didn't...both stayed sitting and looking at the pine tree to left of these two....
A day photo showing two fawn mule deer growing up with only a few spots still visible on their bodies. They're standing on landscaping rocks by the side of a pine tree and possible juniper. Both are looking at me as I take their photo. The dogs were sitting being treated as they are trained to see deer and sit and not do anything silly to upset the deer.
