I'm on preview duty for @silversevensens.com tomorrow and stumbled across this: if Ullmark starts against Philadelphia, that'd be his 100th game played for the #Sens. He would tie Martin Gerber at 8th all-time among Sens netminders. If he plays in 43 more games, he'll finish the season 5th.

i think it’s common practice for forwards to drag their feet when they aren’t the puck carrier because it’s not like he was sprinting wide to open up a lane for timmy either

People's impressions and intuitions about transportation are reliably wrong. It's our job as journalists (not to mention electeds) to think in systems, understand data, anticipate change. Observed numbers on Bloor top 50% for bike traffic. www.torontotoday.ca/local/transp...

During an evening rush hour in mid-June, a count showed slightly more bikes than cars using the Annex section of Bloor Street West

when the Sens eventually trade for another T6F, I hope the myth of "playoff Kleven" has enough value for a team to take him as the "young NHL player" in a deal...

New from me. I wrote about the immigration questions on Alberta’s referendum ballot. www.hilltimes.com/2026/10/14/s...
CALGARY-Why are there immigration questions for Alberta's Oct. 19 referendum on separating from Canada? The answer is that immigration is the cornerstone of global far-right movements integrated into the Alberta separatist push. Immigration acts as a cognitive baseline and the connective tissue intended to argue separatism through a specific lens, and that lens is a fascist and racist one.

Every other genAI company is just as wildly unprofitable, they *all* are setting vast mountains of cash on fire every single month, and almost half the US stock exchange is now based on the hope that this is not a problem. It's a bigger part of the US economy than *consumer spending*

Criminals have been exploiting outdated EBT card technology to steal SNAP benefits from unsuspecting low-income families. Since December 2024, the victims of this theft have had no recourse & federal action to prevent it has largely stalled — for a deeply infuriating reason:
The main thing Congress has done about SNAP theft is to abandon a previous effort to help victims. The federal government had, since late 2022, been replacing people’s stolen funds, just as banks are required to do if your debit card is hacked. As a result, 753,929 households were compensated.

In December 2024, a bipartisan spending agreement that included a provision to extend these reimbursements through 2028 was on the brink of becoming law. But Elon Musk, who had been named a leader of the new Department of Government Efficiency, attacked the legislation more than 100 times on X, pushing to “defund everything.” (Musk did not reply to a request for comment.) Trump then sank the deal. Victims of SNAP theft can no longer get any of their benefits replaced. And with the government off the hook for losses, there is now less incentive to put money into the solution.

I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:
theclimatebrink.com
What if the world hadn't built wind and solar?
Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

All that pressure because Nick Cousins decides to go up to the point (where there are three Devils waiting) instead of down low on the cycle (where there was one defender). Once the forwards are healthy, it's clear to me that he's the 13th forward... #Sens

All the palaver about the sens "not getting shots" is very misleading, and another reason to stop using "shot" to mean "shot on goal" when you mean "shot". Sens had lots of chances, took lots of shots, but the predators blocked plenty and the sens missed a fair few besides.

Unless the #Sens want to play around with their RWs, their most NHL-ready prospects are right shots in Halttunen and Bourgault. If they wanted to try a #BSens player while Eklund's out, they could try Daoust there... otherwise, it might be better to move Halliday up and have Eskild Bakke-Olsen at 4C

One thing about people citing slower car travel times on Bloor West following the bike lane install is, well, that was kind of the point. Drivers were **averaging** nearly 20 km/h over the current speed limit at spots. Road revamp has brought speeds closer to limit. www.toronto.ca/wp-content/u...
Two bar charts comparing average and 95th percentile vehicle speeds in km/h across five Toronto locations over three time periods (2021/23, 2024, 2025/26), with a posted speed limit of 40 km/h indicated by a dotted line.

it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"
The present discussion is a contribution to the understanding of what programming is. It suggests that programming properly should be regarded as an activity by which the programmers form or achieve a certain kind of insight, a theory, of the matters at hand. This suggestion is in contrast to what appears to be a more common notion, that programming should be regarded as a production of a program and certain other texts.
