They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

them. A benefits analyst described the sensation:

You can't justify anything now; you can't be sure of it or prove it because you have nothing down in writing. Without writing, you can't remember things, you can't keep track of things, there's no reasoning without writing. What we have now—you don't know where it comes from. It just comes at you.

A digital recreation of a panel from the 1960s Hungarian comic strip Jucika by Pál Pusztai. In the image (drawn with black outlines and limited color that is also charmingly, wildly out of register) we see the main character, Jucika, a brunette woman with a short, kicky haircut wearing a striped, green, knee-length, sleeveless dress. She is dancing with a delighted-looking man in a military uniform who is holding one of her hands while in the other she's carrying a red portable radio by its little handle. She's grinning back over her shoulder to the left to see an attractive woman – red hair in curly bangs and a pony tail and wearing a different sort of green dress – who is dancing to the music from the radio with a different delighted-looking man in a brown suit. Everyone is having a great time. Below the drawing is all lower case script lettering with a brown drop that reads 'talán ma fog megtörténni', which my Hungarian-speaking friend Matilda assures me translates to 'Maybe it will happend today'

i was sexually assaulted in college multiple times and didn't even really perceive it as sexual assault because of how totally normalized it is, especially if you know the person who does it, and how even things that are really, obviously violent assaults are treated by everyone as misunderstandings

objectively evil stuff done to people by sports leagues and gambling apps. but I blame the leagues as much as if not more than the apps themselves because the apps wouldn't have nearly as much traction without them. and they both treat fans with gambling problems like blood bags

THIS. AI isn't "going rogue" any more than those exploding Samsung galaxy phones from 2016 went rogue. Human engineers poorly deployed a technology and there were negative consequences. The responsibility falls entirely on humans.

Not great how the standard for "AI expert" is preposterously low, even at prestigious universities. This angry dimwit runs an AI research group at Johns Hopkins' School of Government and Policy. He thinks "disinformation" is any paper he disagrees with and that non-sentient bots are people. 🙄 /8
Seth Lazar
@sethlazar
This is true. I appreciate
@mmitchell_ai
 a lot and think she has consistently brought out the best of that particular critical perspective, and worked overtime to bridge between communities. But it’s worth calling out the concentrated and intentional disinformation campaign associated with the original paper, and pursued by some of its other authors. They haven’t spent the last few years writing about agents; they’ve spent them trying to police the discourse to make disagreement with them inherently tantamount to complicity in environmental despoliation and corporate theft and fraud, among other things. Who cares, of course: life’s too short and other issues too urgent to bear a grudge. But let’s call our highbrow disinformation when we see it.Both advocates and skeptics of the moral status of AI systems have generally taken the question to turn on AI sentience. We present an alternative approach. On Rawls’ political conception of the person (PCP), possession of the two moral powers—the capacities for a sense of justice and a conception of the good—is the “necessary and sufficient condition for being counted a full and equal member of society in questions of political justice”. We argue that neither moral power requires sentience and that both may in principle be possessed by a non-sentient AI system. Such a system would share our own moral status; it would not merely be a patient but a person, a self-authenticating source of valid claims.

Gambling on margin is probably the easiest way to quickly go bankrupt. The losses happen all at once and you could legitimately end up owing more money than you put in. These gambling services are not serious entities and I'm tired of everyone pretending like they're a legitimate financial market.
