This is written to fly under the radar, from today’s Sunday Independent (Ireland). The press council upheld a complaint about an offensive and transphobic opinion column by Brenda Power. Sindo was required to publish the decision. @mams4transrights.bsky.social @jesalady.bsky.social
A half page article from the Sunday independent with the headline OMB2590 A woman and the Sunday independent.
The article outlines the complaint, the appeal and the decision.
The complaint relates to an opinion column deploring the fact that an unnamed td provided a character reference for a man convicted of sexual violence against children. A sentence in the column argued that this case threw light on the possibility that a man would “identify as a woman” in order to commit sexual violence.
The press council concluded that “a reference to a protected group [trans people] in this context should have been extremely carefully scrutinised”. It found that the Sunday independent was in violation of principle 8 of the press council code of practice.

Ballpoint pen, watercolor, colored pencil, a little crayon, and charcoal pencil.

Our guy pulls up deep in the forest on his 2-speed bike. He’s flanked by tall dark trees and his path is blocked by a massive spider. He lets the Big Fella know it’s on. “Big Fella,” he says. “I fixed my 2-speed. You still wanna race.” Reader, you know Big Fella wants in on that action. Next slide.Against a starry night sky we see silhouettes of Big Fella and our man racing down a hill. It’s unclear in the drawing who will win but Big Fella is likely about to pull away.

Finn McRedmond thinks "Mary Antoinette" was one of Henry VIII's wives. aren't editors supposed to catch their columnists when they betray their ignorance so severely it damages the credibility of the newspaper for continuing to publish them?
Beautiful women have been driving the world insane as long as has been recorded. The semi-mythical Helen of Troy is the most obvious evidence of this time-worn tradition. Cleopatra was a main character in that great hinge point of history: the collapse of the Roman republic and the creation of the Roman emperor. Anne Boleyn and Mary Antoinette – by today’s standards perhaps not as “hot” as Sweeney – scrambled Henry VIII’s faculties, redirecting the House of Tudor twice.

Prepping myself for downloading dating apps in Kerry again
Photograph of a young Michael Healy-Rae, shovel in hand on a cliffside.

As an aside, RTÉ reported last year that "Mr Healy-Rae has been referred to as the largest landlord in the Dáil. His latest declaration of interests lists 28 separate properties, including guesthouses, student accommodation, and rental homes.

He lists his occupations as a postmaster, politician, farmer, service-station owner, owner of rental properties, and the owner of a plant-hire business. He is a director of four companies," and "Accumulated profits at a property management company owned by Minister of State Micheal Healy-Rae exceeded €1 million last year, according to newly filed accounts."

Just a funsies.

#SpéirGorm #SpéirGhorm #Ireland Screenshot of a young and somehow much hairier Danny Healy-Rae outside on a street, smiling at the camera.

By the by, according to Radio Kerry in 2021, "Danny Healy-Rae is seventh on the Political Rich List, with an estimated worth of almost €4 million (€3,984,962), over half of which comes from businesses he's involved in". Another fun fact!
