Born Today, October 12, in 1916 Lock Martin -12 roles but probably best remembered as the robot Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) :) Did You Know? Before playing Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still, Lock Martin worked as a doorman at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. #botd

You can’t really understand yourself from your own choices. I suspect most of us don’t even know what those choices would be. We measure ourselves by our varied reactions to fixed culture. And we can discuss that between ourselves, to understand one another. Anything else is thick as mince.

Oct. 9, 1926: This is believed to be the shortest toll bridge in the world. The portable span over the Bude River at low tide in Cornwall, England, is operated by William Brinton (right), who asks pedestrians to chip in a penny when they cross.

Just remembered the time I found this in the 1851 census for Greenwich. The enumerator must have knocked at an inconvenient time as he found the resident with “a common prostitute called Dandy Liza”. Relationship to head of household: “whore”, emphasised by suitably appalled squiggles.

The maddening thing is that the BBC can, uniquely, offer the opposite of AI algorithmic recommendation. We can get that anywhere. It’s not what people want. What’s missing is expert, human, curation. Knowledgable people you trust *telling you* that something’s worth watching. That’s what the BBC has

We created gyms because modern day work no
longer required physical activity. Without exercise,
our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al
starts doing our knowledge work.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

The only ‘no go zones’ in Britain are gated communities, country estates full of, or owned by rich, largely white folk. And don’t get me started on the villages they’ve basically ‘enclosed’ on the north Norfolk coast.

A nonfiction book written in, let’s say, the year 1795, is most likely still around in a library somewhere and every other work it referred to is probably accessible in some archive as well. A nonfiction book written in 2007 probably cites a bunch of urls that are dead or rotted beyond recognition.

The whole point of humans as a sociable, tribal species is we should eject people like this, so they starve in the wilderness alone. There are consequences to sociopathic behaviour. Somehow the abstract idea of money has short circuited our basic evolutionary safeguards.

You’d think with all the snazzy technology they have nowadays they’d have worked out how to show a game on a sunny day without the shady parts of the pitch being in total darkness. Scotland’s penalty area might as well be down a mine shaft.
