Whenever I see someone try to point out that AI is just a tool for efficiency and they try to compare that to a spellchecker or something that quickly lets you search for something in a document (like a reg ex find and replace), I have to remind myself that they're probably arguing in bad faith.

Yeah, Dan’s conclusion that Mr. Beast’s output is the antithesis of art felt incredibly spot-on. Also, speaking personally, I don’t think he’s got much charisma. But maybe that’s cuz I’m not a child; he’s all-in on that screaming-with-a-rictus-grin thing YouTubers with child audiences like to do.

when someone is revealed to have done racist things or behaved in a racist way, actively, responding “that person is not A Racist” isn’t appropriate. racism is something you do. if you think of people as “a racist” or “not a racist”, you don’t actually know what you’re talking about. it’s a tell.

There are aspects of Anime NYC I really enjoy. A lot of my favorite artists attend, it's local to me so I don't need a hotel, a lot of colleagues attend so I can catch up with people and network with people new to me... but man, it has felt overwhelmingly more corporate every single year.

It feels weird that there was celebration of Manga Million--a project where Shueisha is trying to spend as little money as possible to get translations of manga--at an awards ceremony celebrating the work of translators and everyone working on manga...

Jan is one of the best, and even better--the courage to tell clients to their faces in-person that they owe us better! Manga and light novels are some of the worst paid gigs, and sometimes it takes us 2 months to even get paid.

Appreciate that this touches on how awful MTPE (machine translation post-editing) is, and glad that there are still some companies who refuse to use it. Also, reminder that contractors are far more likely to get shafted in the credits, either being reduced to a company name or nothing at all.

Anime is great for practicing Japanese listening, but the subtitles aren't made for learners. And just because they're not direct translations, doesn't mean they're wrong. They tell you what the characters are saying, not the words that come out of their mouth. That's a big distinction in Japanese.

Procrastinated by rearranging my manga shelves. I used to a strictly organize alphabetically, but I threw caution to the wind and did it by vibes. Sorta alphabetical at the top, then a Splatoon goodies shelf, then all my Natsuki Takaya books, Madoka, Original, Spiral, and Orange b/c they fit well--
