Carly Smith 📖✍️ @carlysmith.net · 02/09/2026As much as I love Arashiyama, it's become really, really crowded with tourists, particularly the bamboo forest. I don't really recommend people go out of their way to go to that spot anymore, though it IS fantastic if you get lucky and it isn't packed with people. The Iwatayama Monkey Park is cute! 110

Carly Smith 📖✍️ @carlysmith.net · 02/09/2026I think at the end of the day, it's a classic consideration of needing to ask ourselves is a tool we're using making the decisions for us, or are we molding ourselves around the tool? Who is it serving? Who does generative AI really benefit? Seems like all it does is encourage slop. 010

Carly Smith 📖✍️ @carlysmith.net · 02/09/2026It's the same thing I see used in some medical contexts. I know there are some models out there that can more quickly flag issues in something like a brain scan (and they'll have more false positives) to which they draw attention for a radiologist to further interpret. 110
Carly Smith 📖✍️ @carlysmith.net · 02/09/2026The tools I use help me find things faster, and then I can evaluate each instance to see if something like "lie vs. lay" was used correctly in the sentence. Carly Smith 📖✍️ @carlysmith.net · 02/09/2026It is not worth it to argue with them, because they went to their conclusion first and are working backward from there to find their reasoning to convince themselves that their usage of AI for writing or editing is okay. The tools we're using for more precise searches aren't making the decisions. 111
Carly Smith 📖✍️ @carlysmith.net · 02/09/2026Whenever I see someone try to point out that AI is just a tool for efficiency and they try to compare that to a spellchecker or something that quickly lets you search for something in a document (like a reg ex find and replace), I have to remind myself that they're probably arguing in bad faith. 131
