It has been startling hearing the comment "Diversity is not our strength. Unity is." from Hegseth. But it's just more explicit statement of ideas being promoted in political rhetoric in AoNZ currently. It's bullshit. Diversity of perspectives is recognised as a key enabler of high performance.

People used to see philosophical ethics and philosophy of mind as flights of fancy that we, as a society, funded because they were abstractly interesting. In the AI era, they've become two of the most relevant fields of inquiry to the human future. A pretty good argument for academic freedom!

During the big waves of privatisation in the 1980s and 1990s, the debate was framed around who can manage production more efficiently, the state or capital. Everyone bought into this frame and we forgot the more important question, which is who gets to decide what is produced, and for whose benefit.

Interesting to see parties are now happy to break cover and advocate for things that will make poorer people worse off. "Success to the successful" in the open. A recognised destabilising feedback loop for markets and democracies Donella Meadows: Thinking in Systems #nzpol
Success to the Successful
If the winners of a competition are systematically rewarded with the means to win again, a reinforcing feedback loop is created by which, if it is allowed to proceed uninhibited, the winner eventually take all, while the losers are eliminated.

The Way Out
Diversification, which allows those who are losing the completion to get out of the game and start another one, strict limitation on the fraction of the pie any one winner may win (antitrust laws), policies that level the playing field, removing some of the advantage of the strongest players or increasing the advantage of the weakest: policies that devise rewards for success that do not bias the next round of competition
