The alpine wind spiked up a couple of times overnight - noisy little monster! This morning it is perfectly still, but I see my two watering cans were removed from their sheltered spot on the deck and have gone for a frolic down the section. 🙃

A mourning dove is on a bare winter branch in a snowfall. It is in profile facing our left. Its feathers are fluffed, and a good bit of snow has accumulated on its back. Its eyes are closed, showing blue eyelids.

Wanna see a horrible video of something that most ppl never see? This is a rufous scrub bird singing his head off in the most open habitat I’ve ever seen them in. Normally they’re totally invisible in thick scrub - this one is still fairly invisible

Photo of two Magpie Geese among reeds and grass, with Australian White Ibises in the background. The geese have white bodies, black tails and necks, orange legs, and fleshy pink/orange faces with light grey hooked beaks. One of the geese has its beak open.Photo of a juvenile or immature Nankeen Night Heron jumping, with wings raised and legs forward, ready to land. It is a small and stout heron with a relatively short neck, streaked in white and dark brown, with rust-coloured flight feathers. Not pictured: The Ibis chasing it.Photo of a Black Swan on water with reeds. It is a swan that is black rather than white (gasp!), with a bright red beak that has a white stripe towards the tip. Its head is directly facing the viewer as it casually swims away.Photo of Australian White Ibises in reeds, focused on three in the foreground with more in the background. The birds in the foreground are an adult (left) with two juveniles (R) that are looking at the adult, presumably hoping for food. One of the ibises directly behind them is also an adult and might be the other parent. They are white ibises (gasp!) with black heads and long, curved black beaks. The adults have bald heads with patches of pink skin, while the juveniles have short downy black feathers on their heads and shorter beaks.

The Spring winds have struck and everything is rattling and whistling. It's not cold outside but it can be a bit exhausting trying to garden in the wind - you can't just leave something on the ground, everything has to be anchored so ol' man wind does not lift it up and hurl it across the section...

The next few months will help determine whether NZ has successfully eradicated the yellow-legged hornet. Encouragingly, the last known nest was detected in late March. But success depends on ensuring no queens that may have survived the winter escape. theconversation.com/spring-queen...

‘Spring queening’ time will be crucial for finding any surviving yellow-legged hornets
DNA analysis shows almost a third of what the invasive pests have been feeding their larvae consists of honey bees, making eradication vital.

It's great to see tailoring accommodate such extreme movement today. This level of tailoring was a bit more common in the past, as you can see in old films featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but many modern suits will lift off the wearer's neck even when they're just walking.
