One of my goals in writing this book was to get a copy in every college library so that survivors entering the Title IX system would know what they were getting into—and be able to use that knowledge however they wanted. But a lot of schools banned the book.

“we must not alienate our capacities for harm reduction, and thereby our capacities for world building, to others” ~ @profcraft.bsky.social summarizing what she sees as overlaps between Barfield and @prisonculture.bsky.social

More thought provoking @profcraft.bsky.social : “it was the community's ceding of public space that allowed violence to proliferate within it” and the organizing implications of that realization
Long quote:

important elements of Morrisonian democracy, that is, care for, dialogue with, and impassioned representation of the dead.
The organizations collective creation and maintenance of space to mourn themselves and to attend to individual and communal mourning, mental health, and well-being-this collective attention to the private lives of community members-was novel. But SOSAD also held novel ideas about public space and "the public" The sheer range of people and the amount of pub. lic space they organized— from teachers and students to police officers and the incarcerated, from the spots where children were slain to City Hall and every physical and sonic space in between—defies belief. Perhaps no organization in history has held and actualized a more expansive view of the public. As Barfield noted, SOSAD organized at funerals, but also at schools, in churches, and on buses; it organized the street and prisons; it organized funeral directors, teachers, students, administrators, bus drivers, inmates, and police officers.18 The organization thereby expanded the social roles and social spaces of democracy, constantly emphasizing the need for mass participation to transform communities.
Barfield was explicit about her belief that it was the community's ceding of public space that allowed violence to proliferate within it:

No. Congress has the power of the purse. The President generally must spend funds that Congress has appropriated, unless a later law says otherwise.

Prof @profcraft.bsky.social’s description of Ida B Wells’ work is amazing and worth quoting at length, because #goals: The multivalent strategy [Wells] put together through faith, encounter, observation, and tinker…
Text:

Because of this, and alongside her "reanimation" labor, she was
ulucased community
able to perform her miracles, not only to reanimate the dead, but to bringto life a new era of Black protest politics, which included the work of caring for and "bringing out the dead," in politics, of standing with and acting with the
dead in Black politics.
The multivalent strategy she put together through faith, encounter, obser-vation, and tinker-a concerted project of political education in endared Black public and trolling in counterpublic ones, expanding the frame of the lynching photo in service of the antilynching cause, counting the dead and undertaking a rigorous accounting of their lives, their possessions, and dispossessions as mourning practice, saying their names as part of the work of "bringing out the dead"-is worthy of consideration by political theorists.
For example, in our own age of national, scientific, social scientific, racial, and gendered misinformation it is important to note that Wells may well have told the truth more freely than anyone before or since, but she also understood that the truth sincerely told was not always the best response to a lie.
