In my opinion, a failure to understand the white-hot rage so many people feel about ICE's campaign of terror and oppression is what has taken some establishment Dems by surprise in their primaries. Abolish ICE and Nuremberg 2.0 is basically the floor for what the Dem electorate is demanding.

We're about to get hit with (yet another) storm here in Edmonton, so here's a shot of one that I caught in Eastern Alberta awhile ago.
The image captures a dramatic and expansive rural landscape under a tumultuous sky. A vast, unbroken field of vibrant yellow flowers, likely canola or rapeseed, dominates the middle ground, stretching horizontally across the frame. The golden yellow hues of the blooming crop create a striking contrast against the intense blues and grays of the sky above. In the foreground, a strip of lush green grass with hints of brown and purple foliage provides a textural separation from the meticulously cultivated field. This grassy verge appears slightly wilder and untamed, offering a natural border to the agricultural expanse. The sky is a central element of the composition, presenting a captivating display of weather phenomena. The upper portion of the sky is a clearer, deep cerulean blue, gradually descending into a massive, dark, and turbulent storm cloud formation that spans the entire width of the horizon. These clouds are heavy with rain, visible as numerous vertical streaks of lighter gray descending towards the earth in several distinct columns, suggesting localized showers or a widespread storm. The darker, more ominous sections of the clouds are a deep indigo and slate gray, creating a powerful and somewhat foreboding atmosphere. On the distant horizon, a thin, dark line of trees or dense foliage is barely discernible, sitting just beneath the low-hanging storm clouds, adding depth to the vast prairie scene. The lighting is diffused and dramatic, with the bright yellow field appearing almost illuminated against the brooding backdrop, highlighting the powerful forces of nature at play. The overall mood is one of awe and the raw beauty of a natural landscape experiencing dynamic weather.

Yesterday I wrote to Prime Minister Carney, expressing my concern about his government issuing public statements endorsing a resource extraction project in Manitoba in violation of the rights of affected First Nations and the position of the provincial government. (1/4)
June 22, 2026
The Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada
CC:
The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources
The Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty, Minister of Indigenous Services of Canada
The Honourable Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations
Chief Gordon Bluesky, Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation

Dear Prime Minister Carney,
I write to you today to express my serious concerns with the recent public statements issued by yourself and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson surrounding the Sio Silica mining project in Manitoba. It is unacceptable that your government is offering its unqualified support for big resource extraction companies without first fulfilling its constitutional duty to obtain the free, prior and informed consent of affected Indigenous peoples, without the consent of the Province of Manitoba, and with total disregard for the environmentally devastating impacts of undermining safeguards for resource extraction projects.
Despite opposition from Indigenous voices and the Province of Manitoba to Sio Silica’s mining project, your office last week celebrated Sio Silica’s partnership with a German company RCT Solutions brokered at the G7 Leaders’ Summit. Meanwhile, in a press release issued by Sio Silica, Minister Hodgson tacitly affirmed your government’s support for advancing their mining operations in Manitoba. These premature, hastily drawn up announcements simply amount to encroachments on the constitutional rights of a First Nation and of the Province of Manitoba.
Under both the Constitution Act of 1982 and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the Government of Canada must obtain the free, prior and informed consent of Indigenous peoples when it comes to decisions affecting their lands, territories and resources. Had your government met its legal obligation to consult and accommodate Indigenous peoples before seeking to advance this project, it would be aware that Sio Silica’s mining proposal is highly contentious among First Nations and people across Manitoba.
Just last summer, the Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation rejected a partnership with Sio Silica in a referendum among its members, given concerns about its project’s risks to clean drinking water contamination. Moreover, the Province for Manitoba has previously denied a license to Sio Silica based on its risks to public safety, while the company remains party to an upcoming public inquiry investigating breaches of conflict-of-interest laws under the previous Progressive Conservative government.
Evidence clearly shows that this project risks jeopardizing safe drinking water in Manitoba. According to Manitoba's Clean Environment Commission, Sio Silica did not sufficiently address risks to essential sources of drinking water in its license application. The fact that you have ignored this risk demonstrates the same disturbing trend of backtracking on clean water rights shown in your government’s Bill C-37, the First Nations Clean Water Act, tabled last week. In this bill, the Liberal government has abandoned its previous commitments to upholding all First Nations individuals’ human right to clean drinking water, while denying First Nations’ rights over traditional territory as recognized in Article 25 of UNDRIP. Water is life, and life is not negotiable. It is simply unconscionable that your government is jeopardizing this basic human right by advancing resource extraction projects that risk contaminating water sources – particularly of First Nations – while violating your duty to consult and obtain their consent.
In a country as rich as Canada, there is no reason that anyone should have their right to clean water denied, and yet there are still 38 active long-term drinking water advisories throughout our country today. Your government must immediately reverse course and commit to upholding everyone’s basic human right to clean drinking water over the profit-driven interests of big corporations.
I look forward to your prompt response to address this urgent issue.
Sincerely,
Leah Gazan, NDP Critic for Indigenous Affairs and for the Environment
