Has anyone else ever come across a Wild Strawberry flower looking quite like this? The serrated petal margin is certainly new to me! #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social
A flower of Wild Strawberry, with five white petals around a domed yellow mound covered with pistils which is surrounded by spoon-shaped golden stamens. This flower has unusually serrate petals.

Varied our usual walk at Muir of Dinnet and found some different things. Serrated wintergreen (2 pics), few-flowered sedge & small nettle (previously with 1, 2 & 1 BSBI DDb records in their respective hectads). Surprisingly for such a well visited area there is still much to be discovered.

Keying out a Sporobolus today (alien Dropseed grass, found on Hayling Island). Couplet 1: Lowest node of inflorescence with only 1 or 2 branches (not whorled). CHECK. Couplet 4: Upper glume 25–75% the length of the spikelet; inflorescence open or spike-like; plants usually tufted. CHECK.

Slender Hare’s-ear (Bupleurum tenuissimum) near Coalhouse Fort, East Tilbury always slightly astonished this is an umbellifer, like a carrot or a hogweed tiny flowers hard to photograph for #wildflowerhour (finger for scale)
in middle of grass there is a single stalk with a tiny bunch of yellow flowers growing right off it, a bunch of seeds lower downdetail of tiny yellow flowers in bunch, about an eighth the width of my finger end, which is to the left

My last official plant survey of the season today. The last of the over 140 ponds I visited in England, from Cornwall to Northumberland. Here, finally in Bucks, I ended with Nitella flexilis agg. Another plant, & another new area record. My 4th record for this species in this county this year.

Dipped into Hatchet Pond this week to see what charophytes were there: stands of Nitella transluscens out beyond the Myriophyllum alterniflorum. In a hidden corner, a strand of Utricularia minor.

Discovered this strange 'extra leafy' Devil's-bit Scabious plant in amongst normal DBS, which are on their last flowers & mostly in seed. Flower heads only just starting into bloom with extra long green involucral bracts. Anyone in @bsbibotany.bsky.social ever seen anything like this? a mutation?

Further examination of this Symphyotrichum today. Even happier that it is indeed S. lanceolatum. Few hairs on leaf mid-rib, lines of hairs on ridged upper stems, stems reddish, dense growth form. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A few weeks ago this one native plant was covered in life — dozens of butterflies and bees feeding on it. This is knapweed, one of our native wildflowers. Native plants aren’t just decoration. They’re part of the food web. Plant some. Leave some. Make room for life.
