The continuing dry weather means that fungi are still rather sparse, but good to find a fresh group of Lurid Bolete yesterday, associated with Small-leaved Lime at Collyweston Great Wood NNR. Not uncommon in our local woods, but nearly always slug-eaten or rotten when I find it! #fungifriends

After a tip-off from a friend, I was pleased to re-find the Striated Bird's-nest fungi at @wildlifebcn.org Old Sulehay Forest. First seen by me late last autumn, it was interesting to see them at an earlier stage, when the fruiting bodies are covered with brownish hairs #figifriends #fungi

Great to see Imperforate St John's-wort flowering well at Southey Wood yesterday - along with some #fruits. It's quite a rare species in Cambs and Lincs. Perforate St John's-wort and Des Etang's St John's-wort, which both grow nearby, were well over. #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A Black Soldierfly turned up in our garden this week - a new record for the garden and the second locally after my partner found one in a nearby playing field. This now cosmopolitan species is is increasingly farmed in the UK for animal feed, pet food, and organic waste bioconversion.

More in hope than expectation, I headed out for my annual late-August visit to our local Autumn Lady's-tresses population. Despite the scorched and very heavily rabbit-grazed sward, where nearly everything looked dead, I found two plants in flower and a number in bud - very happy! #wildflowerhour

It's been a fairly slow week in the Peterborough moth trap, not helped by thunderstorms and heavy rain, followed by a full moon. But a few species out of the ordinary including Dark Bordered Pearl new for the garden and our second ever Bordered Straw. #teammoth

Highlight of today's recording around Uffington (VC53) was a single plant of Common Calamint at a new site. A potential Rare Plant Register species in VC53 with only 5 other post-2020 localities - it may have spread from Barnack c. 2km south (VC32) where it also grows on a roadside #wildflowerhour

#WallPlants in short supply locally thanks to the hot and dry weather, but Pellitory-of-the-wall was flowering on a bridge over the River Welland (almost a wall) and there was some flowering Wall Toadflax on a tall north-facing wall in Uffington, along with some desiccated Wall-rue #wildflowerhour

The creamy-white flowers of Old Man’s Beard currently adorn local hedges and banks, named after the long feathery styles on the fruit. Devil’s Guts and Hag Rope are other #CommonNames which refer to the twining stems that can supposedly twist and choke trees to death… #wildfowerhour
