Temperatures in the Central Pacific El Niño region are the hottest ever measured (top panel), and far above any other El Niño at this time of year. But, if you adjust for the warming of the global ocean, the current trajectory is not so different from other very strong events.
Two panel plot showing daily time series of temperature anomalies in the Central Pacific Nino3.4 region during the last four strongest El Niño events without and with correction for changes in global ocean mean temperature.

Tokyo succumbs to ‘rain fatigue’ after a record 35 consecutive days of showers
The record rainfall has been blamed on a combination of climate change and El Niño, which has created a prolonged high pressure front in the Pacific

Not a wasp or a hornet, but a hornet-mimicking hoverfly! Volucella zonaria is the largest hoverfly species in the UK, first spotted in southern England in the 1930s and gradually expanding its range northwards.

Today I found my first seabean. This seed has travelled a long way to reach #Shetland. Starting it's journey in a tropical forest, travelling with ocean currents and washing up with our first autumn storms. A little piece of luck and joy to hold onto as daylight fades and winter approaches.

Every year we make the case for keeping leaves, branches, & plant stems in your yard. Bugs need them for shelter! That’s not to say you can’t tidy up: rake leaves into garden beds, around trees, or just in a pile out of the way. All we ask is that you #LeaveTheLeaves! 🍂🐝 xerces.org/blog/leave-t...

Leave the Leaves!
One of the most valuable ways to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the shelter they need to survive the winter. Thankfully, all you need to do is do less yard work.
