Circle of life seeing a performance of Saturday Night Fever on #Strictly. When the film came out I was learning the dances from Len Goodman (oh yes) himself in his dance school over the Rumpy Bar (oh yes) in Dartford.

Morning. Nero, Emily Brontë, 1841.
Painting of Emily Brontë’s pet Merlin, Nero, perched on a branch.
Dated 27 October 1841. She had rescued it from an abandoned nest on the moors.
The painting is held in the collection of the Brontë Parsonage Museum.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Meditations in an Emergency
BY CAMERON AWKWARD-RICH
I wake up & it breaks my heart. I draw the blinds & the thrill of rain breaks my heart. I go outside. I ride the train, walk among the buildings, men in Monday suits. The flight of doves, the city of tents beneath the underpass, the huddled mass, old women hawking roses, & children all of them, break my heart. There’s a dream I have in which I love the world. I run from end to end like fingers through her hair. There are no borders, only wind. Like you, I was born. Like you, I was raised in the institution of dreaming. Hand on my heart. Hand on my stupid heart.

Very out of sync with people right now. I think to fit in I need to 1. love astroturf 2. love the hoovering of astroturf 3. cultivate a less London working class accent. That’s my list so far.

Lyrics that have surprised me in my time: “what I thought was an ocean of love (ocean of love, ocean of love) was just a wee drop of rain” - I don’t blame you at all - The Miracles because of the use of “wee” as I don’t think Smokey Robinson had any Irish/Scottish connections. Banging tune btw

I was trying to figure out if they were starlings or redwings when the two on the left pretended to be an owl just to wind me up.
3 birds on a tv aerial, two on left have heads together facing left and right so their beaks look like owl ears.

Poet voice is alive and well. It usually imitates one particular poet and does go through phases of that being different poets. It might have even sounded fine with the original poet. Why do poets do this? Is it a lack of confidence in using one’s own voice? Makes me die a little inside.

Like clockwork 🕐 The autumn-flowering crocuses have appeared in the parks, including here in St. James's Park 💜 Have you spotted any in the parks? Tread carefully when taking a closer look 🙌
A cluster of purple crocus flowers blooms on a grassy field, surrounded by scattered brown leaves. More crocuses are visible in the background. The scene is bathed in natural daylight, with trees visible in the distance.

There are poetry mags that profess to be working class / innovative etc who so often use established middle class white straight poets for safe sales. On the other hand there are mags that don't actually profess to be edgy or different in any way but they have consistently published new poets.

I will confess I didn’t know Annie Dillard’s writing but I’m sorry to hear of her loss and this is a great example of how powerful a short poem can be I think.
QUATRAIN OF THE BODY'S SLEEP by Annie Dillard
I lure sleep. I bait sleep in with my white throat
I pretend to be asleep. Then everything happens at once
Sleep wraps me round in his dim coat;
I weep; you leap from your corner and dance.

Text: It Might Never Happen

This is not you, but someone soaked in fake Brut
coming at me in a gesture of fake generosity.

For goodness sake, I only want a quiet life,
it’s no crime not to be a gregarious joiner.

'Bus Pass' by Emma Farmer is a poem of connection with a familiar through line: the bus. Read it here: inksweatandtears.co.uk/emma-farmer/ #InkSweatandTears #Poetry

Text: Bus Pass

I sit at the stop we used to wait at for the bus to pick us up,
but now you're three stops ahead
and the journey's been used up.
