On a rare trip south, I was thrilled to be given a tour of the Cotoneasters of Cherry Hinton by #BSBIViceCountyRecorder Lucy Wilson! Learnt so much about this intimidating group of non-native shrubs (see alt-text), and actually looking forward to my next encounter with a weird one for a change 😂

A fave wild flower, Wood Vetch (Ervilia sylvatica). Ancient woodland indicator. Better recording since 60s shows losses across much of its range & local declines. I've seen it in two @scotwildlife.bsky.social reserves. There are other locations in Lothians. @bsbiscotland.bsky.social

Botany takes you to some wild places! #Intrepid High on the north face of Beinn Lair, Wester Ross, with a newly discovered population of Alpine Lady-fern below and nothing but wilderness beyond... 😍
Happy but tired botanist bridging across the top of a gully on the north face of Beinn Lair, with a populaion of Alpine Lady-fern (Athyrium distentifolium) growing beneath him. Behind a loch and another mountain are visible through the gully slit. 
This nationally scarce plant is found in areas of late snow lie, hence the top of this north-facing gully at around 800m above sea level. This was the first record of the species for the hectad.

Nordic Moonwort Botrychium nordicum in lovely lycophyte-rich montane heath in Glen Shee. Frilly divisions, and a shorter stem than lunaria, and GB plants tend to have a lax fertile frond too.

Blue Heath (Phyllodoce caerulea), a nationally rare species of heather restricted to just a few mountain tops in Scotland, with large pink flowers nodding at the top of its shoots. The 300,000+ plant records BSBI members, recorders and recording app users collected last year included 21 records of this plant!
