Butcher’s-broom, Ruscus aculeatus. Up to 100cm. Evergreen. Stiff, glossy, spiny, dark green ‘leaves’. These are actually ‘cladodes’ which are flattened stems. Small yellowish-green flowers arise in the centre of the ‘leaves’. Red fruits 10-15mm.

Black Nightshade, Solanum nigrum. Up to 70cm. Leaves up to 5cm long and variably toothed. White flowers with blunt sepals. Shiny black mature berries.

Wireplant, Muehlenbeckia complexa. Leaves less than 2cm with distinct petiole. Autumn flowering. Small cream-greenish flowers. Native to New Zealand. First reported in the wild in 1906 on Scilly isles. Map is from BSBI Atlas

Dodder, Cuscuta epithymum. Parasitic especially on gorse sp., Wild Thyme and Heather. Red, thread-like stems. Shoots attach themselves with sucker-like pads (haustoria) that extract nutrients. 5-petalled pale flowers with maroon base

Autumn Squill, Scilla autumnalis. Up to 25cm. 4-8 narrow leaves up to 12cm long. 4-20 pale lilac flowers with 3 petals and 3 sepals that look the same. Purple anthers. Distribution map taken from BSBI Atlas

Japanese Knotweed. Surprised to see how many inverts were using this. In 5 mins: Peacock, Hornet, Honeybee, Dock Bugs, 7-spot Ladybird, 3 sp. parasitic wasp, various Diptera & Bumblebees. Clearly late flowers are providing food source, a place to shelter and a hunting ground.

Fascinating to see a European Hornet swoop in, catch and dispatch a Honeybee whilst dangling from one leg. They tussled for a little while before the head was bitten off and then the rest of the body was taken off presumably to feed larvae back at the nest

Nobody guessed so here is the answer. Common Stork’s-bill, Erodium cicutarium agg. Up to 60cm. Basal rosette of finely cut leaves. Leaves up to 18cm with 4-7 pairs of leaflets that are in turn deeply cut. Pinkish flowers in groups of 3-7, up to 18mm across. Long-beaked fruits

Crown Vetch, Securigera varia. Up to 100cm. Straggly. 5-12 pairs of leaflets plus a terminal one. Umbels of 10-20 flowers ranging from white to pink to purple. Pods up to 6cm with little construction between the seeds.

A collective noun for moths is an ‘eclipse’ but I wonder if Flounced Rustic moth gatherings should be called a Fancy or a Flutter or even a Flamboyance. Got to take your hat off to the Victorians for the fabulous moth names

Mossy Saxifrage, Saxifraga hypnoides. Up to 20cm. Forms mats. Upright glandular hairy stems with droopy flower buds. White flowers with 5 petals. Leaves have long basal hairs and 3-5 narrow, pointed lobes.

Sea Arrowgrass, Triglochin maritima. Up to 60cm. Robust rhizomes. Fleshy, dense tuft. All leaves arise from stem base. Leaves 15-60cm by 2-3mm. Numerous stalked, green flowers. Ripe fruits are erect and oval, 3-5mm long and in 6 segments.

Pale Persicaria, Persicaria lapathifolia. Typically to 70cm. Leaves narrowly oval, may have dark blotch. Ochrea either hairless or with fringe of sparse, short hairs. Dense flower spike. Upper stem & flower stalk have yellow dot-like glands. Tepals white to greenish to pink.

Hop, Humulus lupulus. Climber with shoots up to 8m. Stem and leaves roughly hairy. Opposite leaves with 3-5 coarsely-toothed lobes. Fruits are called ‘cones’ and are 3-5cm long. Yellow disc-shaped glands on the leaves

Common Rock-rose, Helianthemum nummularium (2 of 2). A larval food plant for Green Hairstreak, Callophrys rubi. The ‘rubi’ part was provided by Linnaeus as bramble (Rubus) was thought to be the only larval food plant back in the 1750s. It actually uses a wide range of plants (see comments)

Dewberry, Rubus caesius (1 of 2). Slender stems up to 100cm. Stems have short, weak, curved prickles. Leaves divided into 3 leaflets (lateral leaflets stalkless). White flowers up to 3cm across. Fruits have few but large segments (drupelets) and a whitish bloom.
