'I wish they could've seen this': South Island Powwow draws thousands to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The powwow now regularly has 20,000 attendees — surpassing all initial expectations when the Songhees Nation began hosting the event with support from the City of Victoria in 2021, he said.

She's done! Got a NOS crystal in from Japan and I've regulated it and its running pretty perfectly for a watch from July '66.
A gloved hand holding the front of a silver-toned vintage Citizen Crystal Seven wristwatch case without straps. The watch features a sunburst silver dial, silver hour indices, silver hands, a date window displaying "30" at the 3 o'clock position, and a curved day display above 6 o'clock reading "SATURDAY" above "33 JEWELS". The brand name "CITIZEN Crystal Seven" is prominently displayed under the 12 o'clock index.Disassembled watch parts laid out on a dark green workbench surface. The components include an empty stainless steel watch case, a metallic bezel ring, two clear watch crystals, and an unopened small plastic packet containing an official replacement Citizen crystal with a blue and white label marked with part number "54-6013".A close-up view of a stainless steel Citizen Crystal Seven watch head resting without straps on a green surface. The watch face has a silver sunburst dial showing light scratches on the crystal, silver hour markers, silver hands, a date display window at 3 o'clock showing "10", and a day display window above 6 o'clock reading "MONDAY" above "33 JEWELS". The logo "CITIZEN Crystal Seven" is printed below the 12 o'clock position.

It is quite normal for drivers to kill pedestrians in Vancouver. It shouldn't be. On October 17, we need to elect OneCity and COPE councillors who recognize the urgent need to prevent it.

People mistakenly believe that unfunded inclusionary zoning is a way to tax developers and rich people to fund subsidized housing for the poor. It is not. In reality, it’s a tax on working and middle class renters. Actual rich people, who overwhelmingly own single family homes, pay nothing at all.

For those curious, we unfortunately will not be doing a Vancouver debate. Ken Sim's team decided to focus on a limited number of events (five in total) with other organizations, telling us "we're making sure [voters] hear directly from us about our record." As they say, it is what it is.

Tla'amin First Nation has shared this letter they were copied on from Israel Powell's descendants, to Powell River Mayor and Council. The Nation and Powell River's muni gov are collaborating on a possible name change, and this letter is a great gesture of support.
September 28, 2026

To Powell River Mayor and Council:

We are the grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Helen Marjorie (Powell) Fisher. Helen Marjorie Fisher (HMF) was the granddaughter of Walker Powell, who was the brother of Israel Wood Powell. As you know, Israel Wood Powell was a doctor and leader, who was the first
superintendent of Indian Affairs in British Columbia. Although he had never lived or visited there, the river Powell River was named in Israel's honour, in recognition of his political influence and legacy.

Israel Wood Powell no longer has any direct descendants, and we are among his closest living relatives.

We understand that Tla’amin Nation has requested the town of Powell River change its name, out of respect for the harms done to their people by Israel Powell's policies, which included the creation of Residential Schools and banning of Indigenous cultural and spiritual practices. Specific to the region of the Tla’amin People, Powell's part in the delays of reserve allocation resulted in the loss of Tla’amin’s village site at tiskwat as it was granted to Robert Patterson Rithet.

We are supportive of changing the name of Powell River, given the above request by Tla’amin Nation, and also the lack of any historic family connection to the river and the surrounding lands.

Respectfully,

Elise Durante, great-granddaughter of Helen Marjorie Fisher

Marjorie Fisher, granddaughter of HMF

Brenda Buller Focht, granddaughter of HMF

Heather Fisher, great-granddaughter of HMF

Eric Focht, great-grandson of HMF

Meghan Buller, great-granddaughter of HMF

Leslie Campbell, great-grandson of HMF
