Tla'amin First Nation has shared this letter they were copied on from Israel Powell's descendants, to Powell River Mayor and Council. The Nation and Powell River's muni gov are collaborating on a possible name change, and this letter is a great gesture of support.
September 28, 2026

To Powell River Mayor and Council:

We are the grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Helen Marjorie (Powell) Fisher. Helen Marjorie Fisher (HMF) was the granddaughter of Walker Powell, who was the brother of Israel Wood Powell. As you know, Israel Wood Powell was a doctor and leader, who was the first
superintendent of Indian Affairs in British Columbia. Although he had never lived or visited there, the river Powell River was named in Israel's honour, in recognition of his political influence and legacy.

Israel Wood Powell no longer has any direct descendants, and we are among his closest living relatives.

We understand that Tla’amin Nation has requested the town of Powell River change its name, out of respect for the harms done to their people by Israel Powell's policies, which included the creation of Residential Schools and banning of Indigenous cultural and spiritual practices. Specific to the region of the Tla’amin People, Powell's part in the delays of reserve allocation resulted in the loss of Tla’amin’s village site at tiskwat as it was granted to Robert Patterson Rithet.

We are supportive of changing the name of Powell River, given the above request by Tla’amin Nation, and also the lack of any historic family connection to the river and the surrounding lands.

Respectfully,

Elise Durante, great-granddaughter of Helen Marjorie Fisher

Marjorie Fisher, granddaughter of HMF

Brenda Buller Focht, granddaughter of HMF

Heather Fisher, great-granddaughter of HMF

Eric Focht, great-grandson of HMF

Meghan Buller, great-granddaughter of HMF

Leslie Campbell, great-grandson of HMF

Look, Reddit has problems, but also it has this
Redditor ghf110 asks: "Why is there still a Charlie Kirk show if there isn't a Charlie Kirk?"

Redditor Heavy_Arm_7060 replies: "I dunno, lets get his live reaction."

Redditor CommanderSincler replies with a photo of Charlie Kirk doing a live. He is a skeleton man in a lava pit. It is very enjoyable.

Israel stans insist this is normal for "war." For comparison, Mariupol, the hardest-hit city in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Comparatively, there are structures standing. The city remains. In Gaza, it is annihilation. This does not diminish the severity of Putin's crimes. It emphasizes Israel's.

There are dorks (evil, destroying the planet, forcing garbage down our throats nobody wants) And there are dorks (wonderful, making things everyone wants, often for free or very reasonable prices, like this guy who set out to make kits to convert the Lego Game Boy into a FUNCTIONAL GAME BOY WHAAAT)

Watching the Trump-era misogynistic response to a massive, horrifying rape case like Cornell really is defining. It's just more proof that this period is a last gasp attempt to reassert all of the institutions that experienced, ever-so-briefly, an attempt at consequences and equality.

In my freshman year of college I was a paid note taker by the university for a football player. He lived in a frat house, and on more than one occasion I dropped notes off there. According to many people my being in a frat house would have been “asking for it.” Rape is the rapists’s fault alone.

Canada plans to destroy thousands of residential school testimonies. These women are trying to save them
The 38,000 testimonies are the largest body of evidence about children’s experiences in these institutions. Journalist Connie Walker and lawyer Kimberly Murray say losing it would mean losing history — both painful and illuminating

The Expanse had easily the most gender and race-diverse cast in history. It told a beautiful, compelling, story with powerful messages. CHARACTERS DROVE THE PLOT instead of plot mindlessly clunking towards a predetermined outcome. But because it started on SyFy, critics will never give it credit.

One of my fav monologues is from Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, talking about how "none of us know what is going on in each others' lives." I share this level of intimate trauma to give some insight into what's going on with me - and it's led to finding out about others, too.

Biked down to Dallas Rd and Ogden Point today for the first time since I lost Bailey. Testing the waters - no pun intended. As soon as I caught sight of the dog run, my chest seized up and I could barely hold it together. These places are still ours, in my heart. Spent all of today indoors.

The signboard at Lutheran Church of the Cross - it contains the message: "FREE PALESTINE"
Five pride flags are positioned beneath it, and a pride flag is in the window of the church.Comments from the Lutheran Church of the Cross on their FB post with this photo:

It's curious when a message about liberation and love for a people experiencing violence evokes so much anger and rage.

Thank you to everyone building relationships and reaching out to friends and colleagues in Gaza and beyond. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land remains an important partner for us.

When you look at the pushback Ms. Rachel, a children's host on YT, has received for her advocacy for Palestine, it makes you wonder. She desires that children can flourish and live. And just saying that makes people very angry.
