I had a similar experience at the start of fall migration since I rarely use binoculars during June and July since most of the birds are hiding in the trees and singing

Fantastic example of a gust front initiating possible tornado genesis in a line of storms

In Cincinnati they sounded the sirens for a tornado warning that was west of the city. There was then a warning for Cincy the sirens were only on for about at minute and that was 10 minutes before the storm hit so anyone who looked outside would likely see that it was still sunny and ignore it.

Cetacea
Digital Drawing. An early whale (Pakicetus) stands at the water's edge, bending down for a drink. Behind it is a wall of tall grasses/reeds. The entire scene is shown within the shape of a blue whale. Despite the vast gulf in form and time between the two animals, they are of the same group: Cetacea.

Can dudes who scream about minutiae irregularities in dinosaur models, because apparently it's good for scicomm, have the same energy and platform to scream about actual threats to palaeontology?

I love when I see little birds hop, two feet to a bounce. I’ve seen Triassic tracks from little three-toed somethings that moved like that. How many millions of years life’s been hopping around.

Literally said out loud, to myself "lock in, your only task for the afternoon is writing tomorrow's lecture, yet it's 5 PM and you've not even started because you're too busy birding" Got up to move to a room without windows and there on the feeder, my first Rose-breasted Grosbeak of the year
gorgeous black bird with white splotches, a white belly, a big pink beak, and bright scarlet on his chest, clinging to the side of a suet feeder

A shocking new poll result: Many Americans somehow don't have a favorite dinosaur. And only 6% give the correct answer (triceratops). Check out YouGov's new polling on Americans and dinosaurs: yougovamerica.substack.com/p/whats-your...
A split bar chart of YouGov polling data with the headline: "Americans are most likely to say T. Rex is their favorite dinosaur, but many don't have a favorite."

The chart has the sub-headline: "Which of the following is your favorite dinosaur? (%)."

The chart has the note: "Note: "Other" includes responses of archaeopteryx, spinosaurus, plesiosaur, ankylosaurus, allosaurus, parasaurolophus, dilophosaurus, diplodocus, iguanadon, and pachycephalosaurus, as well as responses of "other." We know pterodactyls and plesiosaurs aren't dinosaurs. Opinion about dinosaurs comes from the question, "How much do you like or dislike dinosaurs?""

Eastern N. America folks, it's just about go time for the start of the ~3 week peak migration (unless you're on the Gulf Coast, in which case it is go time NOW). Expect waves of incredible birds for the next month and a half Turn those overnight lights off to protect them! [stolen from local news]
Graphic showing the timing of the start of the busiest three weeks of spring songbird migration in the eastern US and southeast Canada, from 13 First Alert Weather in Ohio. The graphic says "Start of spring migration peak, lights out dates! Start date of the busiest weeks of spring migration. The Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida Gulf Coasts are 7 to 14 April, the rest of those states plus Texas, the southeast side of New Mexico, southern Oklahoma, Arkansas, and South Carolina are 14 to 21st April, Virginia, Tennessee, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and southern Kentucky and Illinois are 21 to 28th April, Wester Virginia, Southern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, and South Dakota are 28th April to 5th May, and the most northern chunk, capturing the rest of the continental US states and southern Ontario, is 5th to 12th May. There is also a photo of a Yellow Warbler to get you hyped.

I hoped the bird designs later on would help me get through the egregious writing but instead every single bird has the same silly woody woodpecker tuft! It’s especially bad when they are in flight and don’t fold the tuft back.

Seeing men turn conversation to nationality, political leaning, religion when challenged with misogyny, instead of, em, misogyny itself. The issue is, men are lawless across societies and settings. In this conversation, there is no other variable at play, but gender and associated power.

Had a dream that there was global panic about the world running out of oxygen, Nintendo was the only video game company to make a statement about it, and the internet collectively spent its final hours on Earth debating whether Nintendo was being genuine or not
A fabricated statement from Nintendo of America's Twitter account addressing a fictitious scenario in which the Earth's oxygen supply is presumed to be depleting at a rapid pace, leaving humanity with mere days to live.

"This is Miyamoto. On behalf of everyone who is employed at Nintendo Co. LTD and its subsidiaries, we deeply mourn the countless human lives which will be lost due to the depletion of the global oxygen supply. To anyone who has ever played one of our games, we are eternally grateful to have created long-lasting fun and memories for you. To ease the suffering of families and children across the world, the Mario Kart World game for the Nintendo Switch 2 system will be available as a free download on Nintendo eShop for the foreseeable future. We hope this small gesture of kindness will ease the pain as humanity prepares for a worst-case scenario."

The statement is distastefully plastered with logos for Nintendo and Nintendo Switch 2, as well as with a render of Mario from Mario Kart World.A fabricated Twitter thread responding to the fabricated Nintendo statement.

John Default Profile Picture: "No one read this statement and thought it was distasteful? Why did Miyamoto think this would help anyone?"

NintenDeen: "Simple: Nintendo is so depraved that they'd exploit a global crisis to boost the player count of the failed Mario Kart World and force consumers back into the Switch 2 ecosystem to boost sales and player numbers."A fabricated Twitter thread responding to the fabricated Nintendo statement.

PlayStation Nation: "What the fuck are you doing falsely advertising sales during these trying times? I went to the website and Mario Kart World is still selling for $80 USD."

Kremling Kevin: "If you actually read the statement, it clearly says the discount is available on Nintendo eShop. Meaning the application on the Switch 2 itself, not the web browser version."

PlayStation Nation: "Point still stands."A fabricated Tweet responding to the fabricated Nintendo statement.

Isaboner: "Nothing for Switch 1 owners?"

Is @societyofvertpaleo.bsky.social being serious here? No, the presence of a name on an email doesn't establish wrongdoing. But the *content* of those emails is what so many members, including myself, are outraged about. This response does nothing but further degrade my confidence in SVP leadership

You know palaeontology online spheres are dominated by men, with a big name being outed as a peado accomplice, the first thing they comment on are "I never agreed with his stance on T.rex" & "I preferred Bakker/Gould anyway" And not "The field is rotten to the core with sex pests and weird men"

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

Lots of folks captioning aurora photos like "for a few minutes we didn't think about politics" guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation
Basic light pollution diagram showing four different streetlight set ups ranging from more light pollution on the left to less light pollution on the right. The most pollution option, labelled "very bad" is a street lamp with a round uncovered bulb on top, making a sphere of light in the air. The next option, labelled "bad" has a tiny cap on top, that limits the upward pollution a bit. The "better" option is mostly uncovered on top, limiting pollution above the streetlight. The final option, labelled "best" has a full shroud overtop, limiting the light to only below the streetlight, where it is needed for pedestrians and vehicles.
