Students asked today why people subscribe to scientistic racism, transphobia, etc., given how many of these ideas are based on bunk science. I would be interested in people's opinions, but I told them a mix of people not being smart enough to grasp the actual science and profitability.

Advanced imaging and statistics are great tools but create the same problem. We gravitate towards complicated solutions to simple problems, to the point that some reviewers now seem to think that basic morphological work is 'eye-balling' a specimen. Like yes I did use my eyes, as opposed to what?

I used to think I had it rough doing fish phylogenetics, then I read stuff from people working on single celled organisms. Bacteria had people flat giving up in the 60's, eukaryotes don't seem to be much better. Talk about polytomies!
