Saturday we welcomed noted historian Charles Balesi as part of a French Heritage Society event. Charles was curator of a 1989 exhibition at the Newberry, "Pen and Press in Revolutionary France." Lisa Kahn, chair of the FHS chapter, joined to view a wide array of Francophone materials.

Perfect. When visiting Chicago I hunted down the same spot and had a great “aha” moment connection to history (even flagged a passerby and said did you know this was, etc. He didn’t but a few minutes later on his return trip from the store he had searched it so we hunted down which doorway.

Director/writer Roman Coppola visited today to view materials related to the Dill Pickle Club, the 1920s-era Bohemian nightclub and free speech forum. We had a chance to visit the original entrance to the club, now a brick wall in an alley—the former Tooker Place—that extends east from Dearborn.

Collection spotlight: The Odyssey! The Newberry has a wealth of materials related to The Odyssey, from ancient papyrus writings to a range of printed copies. Here is a fragment of Homer's Iliad from around the first century CE. (Homer also wrote The Odyssey, of course.)

In January 1931, a lecture by German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld at Chicago’s Dill Pickle Club, just south of the Newberry, was postponed by authorities because of its “indecent” subject matter. Hirschfeld was a trailblazing advocate who founded the world's first gay rights organization. #pride

We're pleased to share we've acquired the collection of Poetry Slam founder Marc Kelly Smith, who started the series in Chicago in 1984. The collection consists of over 30 linear feet of materials documenting the history of the Slam and its predecessors. www.newberry.org/news/the-new...

William Shakespeare was born on this date in 1564, and The Garden of Shakespeare's Birthplace - from an early twentieth century oilette postcard - is one of many Shakespeare-related items in the Newberry's collection, including an original copy of his First Folio (published in 1623). #historysky

From our artifacts cage with Library Assistant Alexis - "Officium Seraphici Patris Nostri Sancti Francisci" is an oversize a choral score by the Franciscan Order in 1773. The book was intended for use in mass, the musical notation being large enough for parishioners to read it from a distance.

This Library Week, we are showing how we protect some of our most valuable collection items. These spheres are FM-200™ Clean Agent Extinguishing System Units. They disperse a colorless, odorless clean agent used in waterless fire suppression, removing heat or free radicals thereby extinguishing.
